credit where's it's due...
X-No-Archive: yes
Wanted to say that *pg* [...a member of this ng] has achieved number 3 (by
volume) in the ukrc postings for april...
That's remarkable and a commitment to taking on the religious diatribe in a
meaningful way....
(not, of course, engaging solely with dilv stupidity)
It's moderated, so some modification of posting style is required, and a
conveyed capability of esoteric conversation is essential but...... well
done, they are already mentioning the de- christianising ( my word....) of
*their* newsgroup and some, there, refuse to debate even intellectual, and
rational, views ( on the basis that they are talkimg to atheists..!!)
Well done PG for challenging some of the views put forward...
I encourage anyone here to move on over to this ng to counter the religious
diatribe...
(phweh.. I'm beginning to sound like an activist............)

On a good month Peter Ashby figures high up in the post count too.
Interestingly top of the list there is Gareth, who although he doesn't post
here, is an atheist. He is one of the most sytematically rational, calm and
intelligent debaters I've come across in any field, but his views also 'go
in one ear and straight out the other' in the case of certain
fundamentalists, and most middle of the road Xians as well. It's fascinating
to watch how some believers are absolutely convinced of the reality of their
god-given truths - at least as convinced as you and I are of the opposite
standpoint (based on the evidence, not faith, of course!) - irrespective of
any evidence or argument that might suggest it's pure fantasy. A real
insight into the human psyche, the believer mentality.
Believing (eg in our chosen leaders and the paths they set out for us,
whether religious or otherwise) is part and parcel of conformity, conformity
part of the evolved psychological fabric that ensures social cohesion,
social cohesion and cooperation providing an evolutionary advantage that has
helped to put us at the top of the food chain over the millenia. So on the
whole we are compelled to believe and trust - if too many people had more
than the average dose of scepticism, that social cohesion would be hard, if
not impossible, to maintain. So it's a kind of natural (and often useful)
drive that imo has gone badly wrong in the case of religious belief.
As for posting to ukrc, it's worth pointing out that there are plenty of
decent folk posting there, and that as Mark says a less aggressive posting
style is more productive - if the goal is to make people think twice about
their beliefs, anyway. Otherwise they just end up grabbing any straw to
refute the arguments, and 'nasty rude atheists' is as good as any. Plus
there are some accomplished debaters there, so don't make the mistake of
thinking them stupid, they'll find any logical holes in your own arguments
in no time at all.
