I'm sure you're right.  As far back as the Victorian age, photos of
flat-capped workman often show one or two with their caps on back to front.

But I wasn't alluding to its practical purposes, rather as a fashion
statement.

A bit like the fifties and sixties thing of wearing sunglasses on top of the
head.

And there's Los Olividados who wear a peaked cap backwards to stop the
olive stone flying down the back of the neck.
