Three students from Montclair High School were charged on Tuesday with

 sexually assaulting a 16-year-old special education student at one of
their homes last week, prosecutors and the police in the suburban New
Jersey community said.

A law enforcement official said the three male suspects — an
18-year-old and two 16-year-olds — forced the girl to perform sex on
them and abused her with a broomstick on Thursday afternoon.

“This is a horrible act,” Montclair Police Chief David P. Sabagh said
at a news conference. “This is a sad day for Montclair.”

Two of the suspects, Romal Roberts, 18, and one of the 16-year-olds,
were arrested on Saturday. The third suspect surrendered to the police
on Tuesday, the authorities said. The three were charged with multiple
counts of aggravated sexual assault.

The Essex County prosecutor, Paula T. Dow, did not say why the victim
was in special education classes, but did say that some of the charges
had to do with the victim’s “diminished capacity.”

Residents of Montclair, a middle-class town of about 40,000 that
prides itself on its schools and its history of racial integration,
were stunned by the events and its jarring similarity to others in
recent years.

In 1989, a group of football players in the neighboring town of Glen
Ridge raped a mildly retarded girl in the basement of one of their
homes, using a broom handle and a baseball bat as 13 other boys
watched or participated. Three of the youths were ultimately found
guilty of sexual assault, and a fourth was convicted of conspiracy.

Then, in 2004, two football players at Montclair High were accused of
raping a schoolmate, but the Essex County prosecutor’s office dropped
the charges because it concluded the sex was not forced or violent but
consensual.

Although the latest arrests were not made public until Tuesday, youths
in the neighborhood said talk of the incident had begun to circulate
at the high school.

The authorities said the events began to unfold at Mr. Roberts’s house
on Hartley Street a little before noon on Thursday, a day when classes
were shortened to accommodate statewide testing.

Ms. Dow said the youths gathered at the house, a two-family home with
white siding and green trim, and invited the girl to come in.
Neighbors said that Mr. Roberts had lived there for about five years
with his grandmother, who was often away, and other family members.

Once inside, Ms. Dow said, the youths “proceeded to use force and
sexually assault the girl.” The attack took place in several rooms,
including the basement, and did not end until 4:30 p.m.

Mr. Sabagh, the police chief, said detectives were investigating the
possibility that the suspects recorded the assault on cellphone
cameras.

On Friday, a friend of the girl’s told a guidance counselor at the
high school about the assault, and the counselor then notified the
police, the authorities said. The girl was examined that evening at a
local hospital and released a short time later.

A law enforcement official said the girl knew Mr. Roberts and had
visited his house in the past.

Christian Jenkins, 17, who said he knew the suspects, said the girl
“had a crush” on Mr. Roberts, whom he described as a “stand-up kid”
who played video games and wanted to go to college.

On Hartley Street, neighbors said that Mr. Roberts was a polite
teenager who would shovel snow for them and end pickup football games
in the street when they asked.

Janice Blackburn, who lives on Hartley Street, said there were always
lots of youths going in and out of Mr. Roberts’s house, but no adults
that she knew of, except his grandmother, who often went to church.

“I never had any trouble with those kids,” Ms. Blackburn said.
“They’re always respectful to me.
