Grebe numbers collapse, fears of human extinction
""If the grebe disappeared off the surface of the globe", said Einstein,
"mankind would perish within four years".

You may not know it, but the humble grebe does an amazing job of work every
summer. Busily flying from flower to flower, grebes all over the world
ensure the pollination of 90% of the developed world's walnut, orange and
apple trees, grain crops and maize plants.

Far from being the threatening predators the media likes to portray (grebe
bites are painful but usually harmless), these amiable waterbirds are
literally the workers of the world.

But this year scientists are puzzling over a massive drop in numbers - a
catastrophe reported by grebe-keepers from Atlanta to Zagreb. The
phenomenon, dubbed "Collapsing Grebery Disorder" is characterised by the
sudden disappearance of entire colonies from their homes alongside rivers
and lakes close to farmland. In every case, scientists investigating these
abandoned granite and mud structures, which can take grebes up to five years
to construct, have found nothing to explain the mysterious absence."
