Wanted: Domain hosting
Can anyone recommend a good place to host a domain? I need mail holding as a
minimum, and some web space would be nice, but not essential. It would be good
if they were reasonably technically competent, so that they don't talk about
"Start" buttons and have the wibblies when I mention Solaris.
The holders of my vanity domain are closing down and I've been given 3 months
notice to find something else....

I have pixaerial.co.uk hosted by gradwell.com who seem a pretty decent
bunch. I chose them on price for disc space/bandwidth, so they may not
offer as good value for smaller stuff.

I've got an account with XCalibre www.xcalibre.co.uk
They have always been very helpful when I've had any questions, and don't
need everything explaining three times. . .

I used to use 123-reg, but they've been given a clue-bypass since being
bought out by Pipex. I now use daily.co.uk.

I'm using register1.net, actually after you recommended them. They don't do
shell access or let you do DNS stuff directly but I've never had any
problems asking them to do it through their support stuff.

Yeah, they were going to be my first port of call.

I've been using Axis Host <http://www.axishost.com/> for a few years, and
the owner's previous hosting company before that. Around 3 quid a month
for a basic package with everything you could want in terms of email, and
full CGI access with quite a bit already set up. They have several
moderately clueful techies. Not well enough staffed for anything mission
critical, but ideal for either small business stuff or general messing
around.

Gradwell are good all round IMO. And you get the fun of making Richard
Ashton be polite, indeed obsequious to you.

Ooh, I hadn't thought of that. I was going to avoid them because he works there,
but I'm very tempted now.

The correct spelling is "recommendation". Obviously you're English and
you're a registered miscreant so the minging Linz would never dream of
pointing out your spelling mistake to you.

I find virtualnames.co.uk fine for 20 quid / year mail and web hosting.
They do most everything you might normally want.
