I think I could learn to like YouTube
I'm not, as a rule, fond of string quartets, quintets, and the like.
This bunch I'll make an exception for as they make a fair stab at one
of my favourite pieces of music, and they're easy on the eye as a
bonus.

It's not a matter of "getting into" it, that first link you posted
leads to something unmusical. It reminded me of a quote from Talking
Folk Club Blues by Fred Wedlock, when a performer announces "I sing my
songs quite free from restrictions like rhythm, time and key

However, You Walk Alone shows promise.

Just because something is unpalatable, doesn't make it interesting or
nutritious. Earwax for example.

It was great up 0:37. Then it went off, like the stinking eggs I bought
recently from Tesco.

I thought the "lion" mark and the printed date were supposed to be a
guarantee of freshness. These weren't just a bit off, they were green,
black, white, and stank. I cracked two that seemed OK. The next four
were like a scene from a cheap horror movie. At which point I gave up
opening them.

When I clicked that, by the magic of Firefox's "reload all the tabs
from last time" setting and unnoticed by me, that violin/viola "21st
Century Schizoid Man" was starting up in another tab. Magnificent, it
was. "How clever", I thought, "the way he hints at King Crimson
underneath that noisy guitar stuff". Jandek on his own was a let-down

Heh!

I haven't seen a bad egg for years and years, about 20 at a guess.
Mind you, I haven't bought eggs from a supermarket for years, I can
get them from my local butcher, that's if I don't encounter some place
that keeps chooks, and sells the eggs, on my travels. Whether these
facts are related, I couldn't say.

On the other hand, after finding that it's not nutritious, I tend to
be very prepared to say that it's not food. "Real Wild" is to music
as fly agaric[1] is to food, but not as pretty.

Someone handed me an LP at university, Rupert Hine's "Unfinished
Picture" which I loved. I bought another one by him and it was shit. I
was puzzled how could someone do something so good one moment and then
turn out utter crap? Reading the cover more carefully it became obvious
that the stuff I really liked credited Simon Jeffes. I didn't hear or
see anything more from him for ages, then I saw "Malcolm" read the
credits and found out what he'd been up to.

"Music For A Found Harmonium" has a nice tale attached to it. He found a
harmonium. restored and tuned it and umm that's it. Oh not quite, he
found it in Kyoto.

Jeffes seems to have similarities with Moondog in that the music is
everywhere on TV, in films and particularly in advertising but it's
rarely credited and most people know it but don't know what it is.

Remembered his name - Ross Bolleter.

His music is very varied. The accordion stuff tends to be more mainstream.
The destroyed piano stuff I find strangely evocative.

I've just remembered that my parents used to have a harmonium... I've got a
great picture somewhere of my recording setup at that time - harmonium, Jen
SX2000 synthesizer, with lots of added electronics hanging out, a couple of
reel-to-reel tape recorders, reed organ, very bad electric guitar (Kay - I
hang my head in shame), a keyboard with home built oscillators that played
in no known intonation - God, I miss those days...

That is nice (site doesn't bloody work in Opera, tho'). Hints of Tom Waits
and also The Lounge Lizards. And Abraxus era Santana.

Also Arto Lindsay

And here's one of his more leftfield tracks...

Better than the original, IMNHO

I recommend Lego, Ben Othman, Ehma, Kemiso, Kouki, The TenGooz, Manu
Cornet. The collection CD KDO-PYLEFT is a decent sampler from the early
days of Jamendo.

Best to find your own stuff though, that's half the fun.

Crow Country is on HighTunes. Sadly the previews are a bit too short to
do it justice.

There's a player in Ubuntu that connects to Jamendo. Damnedifikno what
it's called though. It's the default player that pops up for audio/DVD.

Those I liked and a moments browsing took me to this:

and this

The latter is IMO a better mix than the original, and usually I loathe
remixes.

There are pretty good excerpts on the abovementioned site.

Haven't heard that in years - nice find.

Massive Attack did some great stuff - Teardrop being the classic, and the
video is stunning:

And Elizabeth Fraser's voice is, as always, amazing.

On the vague chance that you (or anyone else out there) doesn't know of her
- The Cocteau Twins:

It's a bit like cover versions - you have to make the song your own.
