ART
I love this:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/7488573.stm

And the artist's responses are quite perfect.

And it is art (de gustibus, etc.).

Interesting interpretation of 'art' seeing as the public are not allowed to
join in because of H&S reasons.

Nope. Definitely art. I'd recognise bollocks. They are small, round and
wrinkly. And green. Aren't they?

What sort of argument is that? Are visitors given a paintbrush and paint
to add their personal touch to paintings on show? Since when did
participation have anything to do with it?

Ah, once again you have exposed me as the shallow twat that is the real me.

Or...

It's bollocks. It has fuck all to do with expression, beauty or even skill.

The fact that the public are not allowed to participate because of "Safety
Reasons" suggests to me that this patronising display of crass fuckwittery
contains an inherent element of danger. I don't consider a dangerous
activity worthy of the public investment under the guise of Art.

Fair enough, but chew on this:

If I produce a painting then I am entitled to submit it to a gallery and be
judged by my peers regarding its worth.

If I run through an art gallery every 30 seconds then I am thrown out onto
the street (rightly so) because I represent a danger to the patrons of the
institute.

It's not art, by any stretch of the imagination, even yours.

Why should art have to conform with anyone's opinions?

Where does it say that art should have any specific properties?

There's plenty of art that I don't like. Tracy Emin may be eminently
shaggable, but her most interesting ideas (note the use of relativity) seem
to have been nicked from her former boyfriend, Billy Childish.

I don't care what anyone does in the name of art. It's their choice, not
mine. I remember with glee Dr. Jonathan Miller tearing Victoria Gillick a
new arsehole on the subject of art.

Where does it say that there have to be parameters?

Sorry for being a tad aggressive, but this _matters_ to me.

The freedom of expression is IMPORTANT. If I want to move my nail clippers
one centimetre to the right, and call it art, then why the fuck shouldn't
I? Under what law?

Deep breath.

This matters to me. A lot.

Deep breath.

Have a nice day...

Value != quality.

Value is what someone thinks that they can get from selling a work of art.

The feelings that I got from hearing John Cage's Music Circus, or seeing
Christian Boltanski's Recompositions can't be priced. Ditto seeing Faust's
reunion gig, at the end of which, the singer carved the word "Rien" into
the backdrop with a chainsaw.

Ditto the steak tartar that I had in the hotel in Obergurgl, or a really
good pint of Guinness on a hot day.

Or, to be zen about it, "mu".

Mu means woof.

A student asked his master "can a dog have Buddha Nature?". His master
answered "woof".

If you simply run through the gallery every 30 seconds it isn't art. It's
also a danger to the people you might run into. However, if you arrange
specific routes through the gallery, take out insurance to deal with the
possibility of anyone being hurt, etc etc, then it's art.

If I simply slap some paint on some canvas then it isn't art. Yet by your
logic that's all the Mona Lisa is, some paint slapped on to a bit of
canvas. It's not what you do that makes it art, it's how you do it.

I thought there was something mentioned about, "the future being

that would be great". Or perhaps I've remembered it wrong.

As I already said. You can describe the Mona Lisa as just some paint
slapped on a bit of canvas, that does not mean that it can't be anything
else as well. Just because you've read that an artwork consists fo people
running through an art gallery doesn't mean that it's any more complete a
description of it.

Yeah I know it's fun to play at being cleverer than all those experts
trying to pull the wool over our eyes. I know it's a kick to be able to
feel superior without actually having to make any effort. However it's
just bullshit unless you have seen the piece of art in question and made
at least a token effort to see what it's about.

They used to make the same sort of stupid put down when artists first
started painting and drawing using perspective. It's possible to describe
pretty much anything in terms that make it seem ridiculous. The question
is whether you want to be one of the sheep who let the media tell you
what to think or not. If the former then carry on. If not then you have
to deal with the thing, not a few sentences chosen to make the thing seem
stupid.

Is Formula 1 just some blokes driving cars about? Is Amnesty
International just some people who want some prisoners set free? Is the
Pope just some old German bloke in funny clothes? Hang on. Scratch the
last one.

The place I go to to jam used to have it on draught, but then the
pipes stopped working or something. They now have this new gizmo,
the Guinness Surger (JFGI). It uses ultra-sound to make the bubbles
do that Guinness Thang.

Nah, that'll have been Guinness Draught, a different brew. Guinness
Export is a less bitter, stronger, brew, more like Entire Stout or
Imperial Stout. Lovely stuff.

Actually, reading, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guinness#Varieties it
was probably _Original_ Export that kept me sane. The Guinness naming
scheme seems just a little confusing.

I think *I'm* still waiting for an insult.

I was going to say I'd probably just take it on the chin, but I'd be more
likely to side step it and follow through with a left cross and a knee.
Actually, as far as Thai boxing goes tonight I've finally dropped a weight
class, from super heavyweight to just heavyweight. I just got from 21 stone
to 14 stone 12 (or from 133 kg to 94 kg) in about 18 months.

Coo. I was about to post to say that one of the functions of art should be to
make people go "WTF?"

Great minds etc etc.

It's why I wholeheartedly approve of lots of art that I don't actually
like. If I can't work out why I don't like it then it's worked, ergo it
must be good art. Whereas if it's just kind of vaguely pleasant then if I
don't particularly like it then it's done nothing worthwhile at all, ergo
it's crap art.

It's only when it's completely impossible to have any emotional
interaction with it at all without a degree in the relevant artform that
it becomes pretentious wank by self indulgent arrogant fuckwits who
should be shot. Generally I only encounter that in contemporary dance.

Pina Bausch.

If you ever get the chance to see any of her stuff, do.

Have a couple of times. Fabulous.

<http://www.sevensistersgroup.com/index.php>

Susanne Thomas. At times in the same league.

<http://www.sevensistersgroup.com/salome/> was absolutely amazing, as was
<http://www.sevensistersgroup.com/trainstation/> and
<http://www.sevensistersgroup.com/doubletake/>.

Company Skin were ace, Sean Tuan John still is pretty good.
<http://www.seantuanjohn.com/>. They did a piece (Lagerland) back in the
90s that finished with the two performers walking regally (with the royal
wave) to a pair of throne. "Crowning" each other with chamber pots,
turning to face the audience, and just before the lights went out,
dropping their trousers. Completely cracked the audience up both times I
saw it.

Rui Horta does some brilliant stuff. Best thing I ever saw was a solo
section in which as a group of performers left the stage, one of them
casually pulled at the strap holding up the soloist's dress, leaving her
to grab at it just as the music for her solo began. She then danced a
hugely acrobatic solo without ever actually allowing the offending
garment to drop away. Rivetting. In so many ways.

Next funniest piece I've ever seen I'm biased about as I had a share in
devising it. It was part of a Contrived and Exaggerated show. We referred
to it as the anti-strip. Which, backed by the obvious track by The
Propellerheads (Better?), featured a dancer initially wearing a bikini
and long gloves, and by removing garments, eventually leaving the stage
completely clothed almost from head to toe. We were proudest of the
"everlasting glove". The right glove being normal and removed slowlyssic
stripper style, then the left glove turns out to be several metres long
and thus somewhat slower than normal to tug off a centimetre or two at a
time.

My absolute favourite of all time is Nikky Smedley
<http://www.nikkysmedley.me.uk/> who at worst creates stuff that is
moving and very funny.

<http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wyzGkx8wvkg> Not the best or most
memorable of her Geographical Duvet pieces, but superb nonetheless.

Been a big fan for ages. Likewise Candoco, Shobana Jeyasingh, Jamie
Wattum, DV8, The Feathersonehaughs and The Cholmondeleys. OTOH I've tried
a couple of times to stay awake during Siobhan Davies pieces and failed.
Yet, scarily, there are people out there trying to emulate her.
