Well, of course there are other possibilities:

1) He wasn't RF, he just looked like him.
2) He was RF, and was tired of fanboys bothering him when he wasn't "on
duty".

From what I've read of our Robert, the second is quite likely.  He's a
prickly character, it seems, and does value his privacy when not "on
duty", and even sometimes when he is.  I can understand that point of
view.  Musician doesn't have to mean all round sociable chap.
