[geek] Gnome / networking crapfest
Have spent literally hours rebooting this machine trying to work out
why the Gnome desktop would take minutes to get going, and fail to
sort out the audio whilst doing so. This used to be an intermittent
problem, and rebooting with fingers crossed used to work. Of course
I don't reboot that often, so it's not been such a pain, until now.
Finally sorted by booting without the PCMCIA networking card inserted,
then pushing it in once the desktop's up.
WTF's that all about? Has Gnu/Linux jumped the shark? Can I have a
reliable OS and desktop that don't suffer from insane dependencies
and race conditions? Is Gnome trying to ape the world of Windows by
making everything a homogeneous mess? Does *BSD have any sort of
support for laptops? Is KDE any better?

I prefer KDE to Gnome, but find that Fluxbox is better than either.

Trying to remember if I've tried that. Used to use IceWm.
Most of the alternatives seem to imply lots of time setting
them up.
Oh, and booting without the network card in seemed to be fluke.
But booting undocked from the docking station and then re-docked
seems to help the chicken entrails align in the right way.

Xfce, here; as it also allows use of gnome & kde apps easily.

Why not? On small machines, and winblows boxes, where I don't
need/don't want/can't run Gnome &U KDE apps, I still use fvwm.

OK - so in which arcane and unlikely location are you, currently?
I'm at home, listening to Face by Meira Asher. A staggeringly good record.

This is hardcore stuff. Seriously.
Her first album, Dissected, is well within my top 10.
