I really don't know how to respond to that. I'd guess that you are either a
lot older than me (47 next month), a lot younger, or just scarily
unimaginative. Punk was not only a wonderful burst of energy, but it led to
many wonderful groups.

Above all it led to being able to get paid gigs even if you didn't have a
guitarist doing twenty minute solos and a keyboard player blanding
everything out with a soup of pseudo classical wank.

Who are they? I don't do youtube at the moment (should be getting
broadband shortly), but I'll keep the post so's I can have a butcher's
later.

The Clash, Stranglers and Jam all did some stuff which isn't bad, even
good in parts. I went so far as to but a Stranglers album, but the
whole ethos of punk, as I understand it, is anathema to me. The Sex
Pistols, in particular, were fucking awful, which put me off the whole
business from the start. Also, there's so much other stuff to listen
to which is so much better, I really can't find the time to pay much
attention to punk.

Maybe the excesses of a small part of the prog and glam rock genres
needed curtailing in some way. Punk was not that way.

I'll get it sorted eventually, but having a reason to leave the home PC
switched off is no bad thing. I'd like to say it discouraged the kids

Sex Pistols - God Save the Queen - this song just gets better and better.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JysZTvAAyu4

The Buzzcocks (original line up) - Boredom. Odd video, but the song is
still great (badum badum).

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qv5gkJ424GE

The Jam - All around the world - one of the groups who were liberated by
punk (see also The Stranglers) without being really part of it.

Wire performing two brief songs:

The Ramones - Sheena Is A Punk Rocker

An absolute classic of US Punk.

New wave, rather than punk. If you don't like this, then I don't know what
to say.

Then there's Hong Kong Garden by Siouxsie and the Banshees. If that
doesn't set your feet tapping it's time to get the death certificate
sorted out. Or Free Money by Penetration, with the glorious layered vocal
overdubs at the end. Not to mention Essential Logic, Kleenex, Laughing
Apple, Stiff Little Fingers...

Essentially, though, punk was best heard live. You had to be there to
really understand the basic truth behind the punk ethos. Right now some
people are entertaining some other people, at some other time any of the
people being entertained could just as easily be the ones on stage. The
separation between performer and audience is entirely temporary and
doesn't require any farting about with status games. That's us down here
and that's us up there. You can't get that from recordings.

Pah! ELP could do foot-tapper. There's more to music than making
people's feet tap, and others, like George Thorogood and the
Destroyers to name one, do it much, much better anyway.

>Stiff Little Fingers...

What I recall about them tells me they were nothing to do with punk.
However, my memory may be playing tricks.

What a pile of bullshit. Emperor's new clothes, although they're
getting old by now.

When I go to a gig, I at least want the performers to know what
they're doing, which often sets them apart from a large part of the
audience, including myself. That's a lot to do with why I'm prepared
to pay hard-earned money to see and hear them.

> You can't get that from recordings.

Of course not, there's no crowd involved when listening to a
recording. You only have the music to listen to. That's when you
discover that punk is crap.

It's also only an opinion that punk is worth bothering with in the
