Not sure this is going to be exactly the right place to ask this.   I
have been on the dole recently anyway.

Basically I'm going to get some more qualifications so I can get a
better job - and to be honest, have more stable employment.

I already have an NVQ in Engineering - but to cut a long story short,
I want to do a Btec in Mechanical Engineering.

So, as I'm going to pay for this myself, do you think I'm going to get
a reasonable job with a Btec?

Depends on what you are defining as a reasonable job.

Some types of work require a degree, some don't need any
qualifications, merely relevant experience.

Without experience you dont stand a chance, I talk by own experience.

If your course is more than 16 hours you lose benefits, if not you get
discounted fees at college, plus possibly some bursary

Hmmm.....not sure a Btec would cover.
Its usually up to employers to specify qualifications, many aren't as
bothered by that as by experience.

Though as more and more people get degrees its likely more employers
will want to include degrees even when not necessary as part of job
requirement.

Sure you don't want to do a degree instead? Still have to pay for it
but grants and loans come to about £6k a year income.

No not really.  I just want to do a service engineering job, or
something manually skilled.  I have a NVQ2 in engineering, I'd do the
level 3 if I could, but you can only do that if you are working in the
industry already.

Maybe I'll have to think of some other way to get a better job.  This
country is so messed up.

When I was at my local college inquiring about the BTEC, there was a
guy there you had a degree in marine biology, he wanted to train as an
electrician.

Yes, even 30 years ago it was possible to have no qualifications at
all and get a decent job.
Give it time, we'll have requirments for politicians to have
degrees.......

More money as an electrician in many areas than marine biology jobs -
plus more jobs around.  :)
A local university lecturer retrained as a plumber because of better
hours and more money.
I used to know a security guard with a 1st honours degree in Economics
- he loved being a security guard, not so much stress as many other
jobs that his degree allowed him to go for.

I think 12 months ago being an electrician was a good idea.  Not sure
now is a good time.  I've been working a lot on site, and the work is
starting to dry up.  I had thought about it myself, but in the end, I
don't think it will be worth it.
