I've been in similar position before and my wages were deducted at BR.
As far as I'm aware, unless I submit a P45 they'll assume I've used
all my allowance and tax me an all of it.

Not at all. If you start work without P45, you should complete P46 which
gives a range of options.
Check this out at work.

Thanks but be fair.... the Jobcentre did not muck this up. Blame your
employer if you filled the form correctly.
