I was looking for a place for just over a year (while staying with
relatives), this place is the cheapest place I found by quite a margin.

Yes I think rents are extremely overpriced at the moment.
I think the huge amount of money given to the banks by the labour
government isn't going to make them cheaper anytime soon.
It's really hard for renters. Have you tried the council?

Nothing against the influx of Eastern Europeans, but they seem content with
three or four people to a one bedroom flat too, that obviously pushes the
rents up too.

Yup, they were my first stop, but I was told (off the record of obviously)
that as I was a white heterosexual single male born in the UK I stood more
chance of winning the lottery two weeks running :^<

I think it was a case of there being several hundred thousand extra
people looking for rents. Even cramming them in 12 to a house (It
trashed the house, not surprisingly) doesn't really stop the excess
burden on rentals.

Indeed. It should be said that being white, heterosexual, or born in the
UK do not affect the housing points calculation.
