checking out an area to live
I'm looking at a quarter house to rent on saturday, this will be my first
ever property i'll have lived in,

i was wondering how i could check the area ou with regards to crime,
problems with youths/hoodies/joy riders etc.

The area is Balderton, Newark on trent,

The place i am interested in seems nice, a quiet cul-de-sac, far enough away
from the main road so no one should go down that road unless they live
there, as there's no way out other than the wany they came in...except for a
snicket to the next cul-de-sac up.

Which i walked up, and didnt like what i found, one of the houses had it's
front door boarded up and 'police do not cross' tape all over the place,

I've tries googeling for the street name, it only brings up houses to rent
or buy there, tried the newark papers, nowt reported, but it could have
happened last night.

i am thinking if i go to the police station and ask, i'll be told to mind my
own buiseness, especialy if it is recent and they are still investigating.

It's all private houses on that estate, so asking a council housing officer
type bod wouldent work... i dont think.

I dont want to be nosey or owt, i just want to know if it was something like
a domestic that got out of hand, which could happen anywhere, or it was the
local drug den that has been raided, a terrorist lived there and was making
bombs in his garden shed or things like that,

basicaly something that could affect us if we move there,

You can check some things through the neighborhood statistics site
(haven't got the URL on home system but can look it up tomorrow, or
you can google it).
Data is a little old, but will give an indicator of crime, education,
percentage in work, deprivation and so on.

Whether something affects you is a little more open to chance. Can be
mugged in a very low crime rate area, can be stabbed while sunbathing
amongst others on a nice day.
Or can avoid being a target of crime in a high crime area. Sheer
chance at times. :)

Go up on friday night. Ask yourself how you feel about walking round
at night?
Do kids play out? Is there broken glass on the street? Is the street
tidy? Are the other houses nice?

Going up more than once is the best way of gauging what its like. But
it's half term here now, which means the youths have different
patterns of behaviour.

Go and knock on and speak to the neighbours. This is what you need to
do if you're buying a house - find out who lives next door. Perhaps
ask the tenant if they're there on saturday what the neighbours are
like, what the area is like, what problems they've had if any and if
they know what the boarded up place was.

Alleys?
Ring council today and ask if they have any plans to gate off alleys.
Yes they're wonderful shortcuts but cause all sorts of problems if
there are lots of teenagers in the area.

You could try ringing the police and asking for the community support
officer if they have one - just to make general enquiries - sometimes
they are very chatty and will tell you everything you need to know.
