Off duty Police march to Downing St over pay.
WTF! History was made yesterday as some 20,000 off duty ol bill marched on
the capital, there is never a copper around when you want one. They accused
the government of robbing them over a pay rise agreement, no surprises there
and no arrests were made.
I bet if you gave them the minimum wage we would not have any ol bill left,
but mear mortals on JSA are expected to work for half of what the ol bill
earn.
The NMW is not good enough for our police or the government so why are they
trying to force the unemployed to work for such a low pay?
Clearly no fucker in their right mind wants to work for NMW.

it's called the National Minimum Wage because it's the minimum an
employer can pay. Most pay above NMW. Of course no-one wants to work for
minimum pay but some do, and then move on to better paid jobs. Others
just don't want to work at all and languish on JSA for years moaning
about their lot in life.

The NMW is a charter to rip workers off, it should be called the national
poverty wage, because thats all its good for.
I dont know where you get this "others dont want to work" nonsense from, you
have no proof of that.
"Move on to better paid jobs" ????? yet more pie in the sky nonsense, if
better paid jobs were available, I am sure they are long gone by now.

It's better than what existed before where people were being paid £2 an
hour and having to work 80 hours a week.
How is it pie in the sky that people move on to better paid jobs? It's
easier to get a better paid job when you're in employment. Many
employers won't touch the long term unemployed with a barge pole. Far
better to employ someone with a work history. As for "if better paid
jobs were available, I'm sure they are long gone by now", well that's
just one of the silliest things I've heard. Jobs become available all
the time, or do you think a job vacancy only exists once and that is it
forever? They are out there, but they are probably out of your reach
since you will never get one while you languish on the dole moaning
about your lot in life.
Face it Niteawk, you've made yourself virtually unemployable. You need
to do what other long term unemployed do, start at the bottom on NMW and
work your way up to a decent job. You aren't likely to get one in the
position you are currently in.

There are some jobs people will do for NMW, I doubt dealing with
drunks on a saturday night and the other 'pleasant' jobs the police
get to do are amongst them.
It's a vocation as much as a job but there's still a price society has
to pay if you want the job done and if so many are prepared to bitch,
moan and march about it clearly the price being paid is not enough.
I wonder how many will march in support of a payrise for nitawk? I
doubt even niteawk would get out of the sack..

I am sure people were on £2 an hour, there was a time when people were on £2
per week or year even, we have moved on since then, there is such a thing as
the cost of living to consider, if the NMW is so fair then all government
and public sector workers should accept it, thats all they should be allowed
to earn.

Who cares what employers do or who they will or wont employ, I dont. All I
know is the NMW is not an acceptable rate of pay when compared to the
current cost of living.

Why dont you face it, if people are or have become unemployable then its due
to the way this country is being run. Its not up to me to create jobs,
provide training and education, thats down to the government. Obviously they
are quite happy with the work force the way it is, if they need skilled and
trades people, they just open the flood gates and let them in from abroad.
If companies want cheaper labour then they can relocate to some third world
country and pay 10p per day wages with an optional bowl of rice thrown in,
thats the way it is these days.

Being a copper must be really hard, my arse it is. I could do it no problem,
most of the time is spent sitting around doing nothing or pulling motorists
for speeding or no tax. Yeah thats a really hard job.

They can demand higher pay because there is enough of them to do it, nobody
gives a shit about what happens on council estates any more, they can strike
if they want, no one would notice. I dare say that in some areas people
think they have been on strike for years.

I am organising this right now, peasants of the UK unite, if all low paid
unskilled workers went on strike tomorrow, this country would grind to a
halt.

You know fine well what I meant. There were people earning £2 an hour
when the NMW came in back in the late 90s.
It's not meant to be a wage that's the be all and end all - but it's
better than living on JSA or earning very low wages and having to work
all the hours under the sun. It can also be a stepping stone between JSA
and getting a higher paid job.

No. people have become unemployable because they are ultimately allowed
to fester on benefits.
Face it, come this time next year you'll still be posting the same
things and you'll still be unemployed.

People of education are not called poets or mathematicians, etc.; but they
are all these and judges of all these. No one guesses what they are. When
they come into society, they talk on matters about which the rest are
talking. We do not observe in them one quality rather than another, save
when they have to make use of it. But then we remember it, for it is
characteristic of such persons that we do not say of them that they are fine
speakers, when it is not a question of oratory, and that we say of them that
they are fine speakers, when it is such a question.
It is therefore false praise to give a man when we say of him, on his entry,
that he is a very clever poet; and it is a bad sign when a man is not asked
to give his judgement on some verses.
35. We should not be able to say of a man, "He is a mathematician," or "a
preacher," or "eloquent"; but that he is "a gentleman." That universal
quality alone pleases me. It is a bad sign when, on seeing a person, you
remember his book. I would prefer you to see no quality till you meet it and
have occasion to use it (Ne quid minis),[3] for fear some one quality
prevail and designate the man. Let none think him a fine speaker, unless
oratory be in question, and then let them think it.

religion, then, teaches men these two truths; that there is a
God whom men can know, and that there is a corruption in their nature which
renders them unworthy of Him. It is equally important to men to know both
these points; and it is equally dangerous for man to know God without
knowing his own wretchedness, and to know his own wretchedness without
knowing the Redeemer who can free him from it. The knowledge of only one of
these points gives rise either to the pride of philosophers, who have known
God, and not their own wretchedness, or to the despair of atheists, who know
their own wretchedness, but not the Redeemer.
And, as it is alike necessary to man to know these two points, so is it
alike merciful of God to have made us know them. The Christian religion does
this; it is in this that it consists.
Let us herein examine the order of the world and see if all things do not
tend to establish these two chief points of this religion: Jesus Christ is
end of all, and the centre to which all tends. Whoever knows Him knows the
reason of everything.
Those who fall into error err only through failure to see one of these two
things. We can, then, have an excellent knowledge of God without that of our
own wretchedness and of our own wretchedness without that of God. But we
cannot know Jesus Christ without knowing at the same time both God and our
own wretchedness.
Therefore I shall not undertake here to prove by natural reasons either the
existence of God, or the Trinity, or the immortality of the soul, or
anything of that nature; not only because I should not feel myself
sufficiently able to find in nature arguments to convince hardened atheists,
but also because such knowledge without Jesus Christ is useless and barren.

truths, eternal and dependent on a first truth,

wanting. The rule is
uprightness.
Beauty of omission, of judgement.
31. All the false beauties which we blame in Cicero have their admirers, and
in great number.
32. There is a certain standard of grace and beauty which consists in a
certain relation between our nature, such as it is, weak or strong, and the
thing which pleases us.
Whatever is formed according to this standard pleases us, be it house, song,
discourse, verse, prose, woman, birds, rivers, trees, rooms, dress, etc.
Whatever is not made according to this standard displeases those who have
good taste.
And as there is a perfect relation between a song and a house which are made
after a good model, because they are like this good model, though each after
its kind; even so there is a perfect relation between things made after a
bad model. Not that the bad model is unique, for there are many; but each
bad sonnet, for example, on whatever false model it is formed, is just like
a woman dressed after that model.
Nothing makes us understand better the ridiculousness of a false sonnet than
to consider nature and the standard and, then, to imagine a woman or a house
made according to that standard.
33. Poetical beauty.--As we speak of poetical beauty, so ought we to speak
of mathematical beauty and medical beauty. But we do not do so; and the
reason is that we know well what is the object of mathematics, and that it
consists in proofs, and what is the object of medicine, and that it consists
in healing. But we do not know in what grace consists, which is the object
of poetry. We do not know the natural model which we ought to imitate; and
through lack of this knowledge, we have coined fantastic terms, "The golden
age," "The wonder of our times," "Fatal," etc., and call this jargon
poetical beauty.

This time next year I could be a millionaire :)

Rather free with the generalisations here niteawk, I lived right next
door to a council estate and the inhabitants by and large worked and
were decent people. It was largely indistinguishable from the rest of
the estate which was owner occupied.

No shit sherlock! I doubt anyone would argue with that statement as
it's so effing obvious. Of course the low paid use supermarkets,
shops, banks, pubs, DWP offices and have their bins emptied. All of
these would grind to a halt hurting the strikers as much if not more
than anyone else.
We certainly wouldn't notice if you went on strike.
