IB.......In Need Of Advice
I am currently on long term IB. I went onto it when i was still working, but now am on a
reduced rate, due to the fact that i took an early retirement, due to my health problems,
and i am NOW in reciept of an occupational pension
Sometime in the near future, i will be going into hospital for an operation that will
hopefully mean i am fit enough to return to the jobs market soon after it. However, since
i was working when i took ill and am not going to be in work when i am better, i am unsure
of what to do. Does my GP isue a note saying i am fit for work? Do i sign on for JSA? (i
know i wont be entitled to any money, but its a case of getting the NI stamp credited)
Or, as i have about 40 yearsworth of contributions, can i just get the Job Centre Plus to
stop my (pathetic ammout of) IB and never bother with them again, until i reach Government
Pension age?
(The last alternative appeals to me the most.)
Any advice gratefully recieved

The rules on NICs for pension have recently changed. you only need 30
years now. Get a pension forecast to confirm.

Sorry TL I misunderstood your problem. You had said * I have about
40yearsworth of contributions.....can I just get the Job Centre Plus to
.......never bother again until I reach retirement age*
I had assumed that you were concerned about NICs for pension not for other
reasons.

If your condition improves to the extent that you consider yourself fit
for work then just phone the incapacity benefit section when this
happens. They will advise you if you need a final certificate from your GP.

Signing on to JSA means that you're fit to work, but also that you're
available and actively seeking work. If you are available for work and
looking for work you might be better off asking to see a SIBA (specialist
IB advisor) because they can get you onto better paying schemes.
