Jobcentre Plus New Deal
CALLING ALL PEOPLE IN UK WHO HAVE EXPERIENCED JOBCENTRE PLUS NEW
DEAL.
I would like to know your opinion of the New Deal 2 week course and
rest of New Deal programme. My experience has been bad. However, I'd
like to know YOUR opinion. I'd like everyone to feel free to exchange
their views on this subject. THANKS!

I've been on New Deal once and I never want to go on it again. On the
first day, the "manager" didn't expect everyone to turn up. So about
15 of us were crammed into a tiny room and had to wait there until
they prepared a bigger room. When we got to the bigger room, we
stayed there for 3 weeks to learn how to fill in application forms and
write letters. I sat next to a guy (ned) who just talked about how
tough his dog was and how he'd like to go out and beat up people at
night. Needless to say I didn't waste anytime getting myself into a
college course to get the hell out of there. New Deal did not do
anything to help me into work. It was like being in jail. I was
threatened many times with benefit cuts if I didn't comply with the
New Deal programme. I was even told to turn up on Xmas Eve at the
programe centre only to find out that they changed their minds and
gave everyone the day off. They didn't tell me in advance. Whenever
I hear the words "New Deal" is sends shivers up and down my spine.

There's been an announcement made today that the Government are going to
run a 6 month trial forcing unemployed people to sign up for training
etc or risk losing benefits. Just heard it on the news, but I don't know
all the details...

got a link to more details?

problem with forcing people to sign up is that the jobcentre have no
training to offer so how will this work?

another good joke from the idiots at the top.

no link at the moment except this one, which is just a general thing
about people on benefits:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/7113409.stm

but that one only applies from October 2008 and has already been
announced previously and is mainly centred around single parents (the
JSA bit is near the bottom).

I assume it's a new service that will be coming in soon - several
Government schemes have been put out to tender and are due to start from
next summer. I assume that is one of them.

What training, how to kill 6 months by doing nothing worthwhile? How to keep
unwanted civil servants employed? I would be most interested in any course
that provides real time learning an actual job related skill.

Rotfl, yes its classic bullshit, the word training as used by the JC/ND has
now become a by word meaning to do fuck all, sit on ones arse, have a seat!
keep us ie JC/ND in work, etc.

You mean along with IB claimants they now want to target single parents as
well. You never know, one day they might get round to tackling real problems
that cause unemployment like the lack of any worthwhile jobs, I was going to
say training but we cant use that word any more as we know it means nothing.
They could start by booting out all the illegal immigrants we have here and
be a bit more particular with who they allow into the country.

If you dont mind me asking, how the hell did you get put on ND for only 2
weeks! The actual courses usually run for 6 months and you can spend up to
12 months having to see a ND adviser before they allow you to go back to
normal signing on. Then you have to make a fresh claim and its back to
seeing ND advisers while they sort out a new JSAg.

As for my opinion of ND, as one poster to this thread said, it like being in
jail which is a very apt description. In my experience it brings together
large groups of criminal types who sit planning what to rob next and can be
a scary place if you are not of that ilk.

It does not help people to find gainful employment and seeks only to fulfill
it obligation to the DWP insofar as making you perform childish exercises
for eg like getting you to write down where the fire exit is and where the
fire extinguishers are. This can and usually does go on for several hours in
a day and is constantly repeated over the weeks while you are on the course.

Other mindless tasks include writing down the names of the staff ?, watching
old
70's videos of job interviews. Correcting errors in job adverts. Doing word
search puzzles.
Arsing about with incomplete computer modules which was basically doing the
same BS as above except this was on an out of date computer and constantly
rewriting your CV and spec letters until they were happy with it.

We called these exercises brainwashing sessions. You really do fuck all that
is of any value to employers so how they can call it training when you do
not learn any job related skills is beyond me. The whole exercise is
bureauracy for the sake of it, all they are doing is pushing people around
because it gives them something to do, it keeps them in highly paid jobs for
doing nothing productive, I would say in fact that the staff do less then
the unemployed who they deal with.

The bottom line is they are certainly not providing anything that remotely
resembles training for actual work, all they are doing is wasting billions
in tax payers money supporting a system to keep people on the dole who are
on the dole anyway so why pay more. And then the fuckers try to make you the
out of work idiot, feel guilty for being unemployed when its you who is
keeping them in work No fucking gratitude mate, thats whats wrong with
todays society. :)

Your thing about illegal immigrants is a continuous theme - I take it
you hate them.

Perhaps if they had no jobs to come to - because the unemployed took
those jobs - would make it easier for it to happen.

Of course I do not hate them, what gives you that idea, just because I point
out something the government is blatently trying to deny does not mean I
hate people. Common sense should tell if the country is filling up with
immigrants then there is going to be less of everything and that includes
jobs to go round.

There is no jobs to come to as you put it and the ones that are here and in
work are complaining about being exploited, oh we pay rent and buy food and
we have no money left. WELCOME TO RIP OFF BRITAIN MATE.
They are being flown in from Poland to fill poverty wage jobs, this has the
knock on effect of keeping wages well below what is required to live on in
this country because those idiots will take low paid jobs as they dont know
any better. Once they serve the required minimum of time working here its
straight down to the JC to claim for the wife and 4 kids.

Well, sounds like it worked as an incentive to not remain with the
program. Got you to get onto a college course didn't it? :)

If its one of the tendered projects, will be about keeping a company
amused while letting them make money.
Oh, and training courses as well, though some of the tender stuff
didn't highlight that too much.......

For you, what exactly is a job related skill?

Plenty of worthwhile jobs. People keep getting them.
Of course, those are people willing to actually work. Or people with
skills able to do the jobs and that the employer wants.

Plenty of jobs to come to.
The press seem to keep going on about people from other parts of the
EU taking jobs, so got to be jobs to come to.
Unless the press are wrong?

Poverty wage jobs? Yes, always be plenty of those. As poverty is
always defined in this country as below a certain average, then even
if minimum wage was £10 an hour, still be poverty wage job.
Course, the cost of living would be a bit higher then too. :)

The low paid jobs are considerably higher paid compared to just a few
years ago, without such a massive increase in rent or food costs.
Before NMW, there were plenty of £2 an hour jobs. Even £3 an hour for
shift work. Now many of those are more than double in wages. Plus tax
credits, which didn't exist a few years back.

Seems like many of the foreign workers have a better work ethic than
the natives. I don't see so many foreign benefit claimants looking to
stay on benefit the rest of their life compared to natives.
Maybe its how they were raised?

Well if the people from elsewhere in the EU are able to get them but
we can't, is it because of skills?
Never a large number of totally unskilled jobs around. But seems to be
plenty of unskilled people who rely on previous experience only. Not
skills.

How to write is a skill in itself.
Use it for the money making part of my job, as do thousands of others
in my profession.
Fairly sure many other jobs also have writing skill as useful at
least. Ever tried reading a report thats badly written to start off
with?

Lets see, what else was mentioned. How to fill in application forms.
Useful to get the job, even useful in some types of work afterwards
too.
But if you don't get the job, the skill is useless in work.

Some people I know spend a lot of time doing LearnDirect courses. Must
be useful at times, some of the residents of the hostel have gone on
to jobs, self employment (2 of them have become hairdressers) and two
have gone on to do social work degrees at the local Uni.
Don't know about elsewhere, but locally the golden welcome for social
workers is £3k last I looked. Thats in addition to a wage.

No, wasted a whole year on ND doing nothing which means I have to wait
nearly another year to apply to get on a college course, sept 08 is the next
enrolment time at my local college.

I saw Gordon Brown on the news just now saying people must learn a new
skill so they can get work, its about time those fucking idiots woke up to
the reality that there are people out there who want more than shelf
stacking and cleaning jobs.

Maybe this explains why colleges are now offering courses in plumbing, then
again if this is the case there is going to be one hell of a mad dash to get
on one.
If by some miracle I do get on such a course, I expect the idiots at the JC
will say I am making myself unavailable for work DOH!

Maybe then again maybe not, it didnt always used to be like that. The cost
of living has been driven up by the lack of affordable housing, you pay a
lot more rent as a percentage of your wage now than you ever did in the
past, selling off and giving away council houses has fucked everything up.
My rent is a £150.00 pw, what job do you think I can get to cover that,
certainly not one in Tesco stacking shelves.

I disagree, in the eighties I was earning £250.00 pw, 25 or so years on and
the wage has not moved compared to the overall cost of living.

Thats funny, when I go to the JC I mostly see claimants of ethnic origin,
the other thing of note is the amount of foreign JC/ND staff

OK, so want more than shelf stacking or cleaning jobs. Then if you
don't already have them, get the skills to get the better jobs.
There will always be some who won't get more skills and qualifications
who can do the shelf stacking and cleaning for you.

Have you thought of open university? Next enrollment for some of the
courses I want is Feb 08 (just started a 30 point course this month).
Could get a couple of courses done before September.
Oh, and the 10 point courses are just a few hours a week......

Ok, you have high rent.
Round here, flat rental is about £50 a week. Even 3 bed semi can be
had for rent of £110.
8 years ago they were about £40 a week and £90 a week.

Yes, rents have gone up while wages in some jobs have more than
doubled. Just the higher wages didn't go up much - the ones without
government control.

You weren't doing the same sort of work as the lowest paid then.
Hotel work just before NMW, £2 an hour for night staff cleaning.
Unqualified nurses, £3 an hour in nursing homes - cleaning up shit,
bathing residents, taking them loo, feeding some and so on.

If you were on £250 a week in the eighties then you were on good money
for the time.

Haven't come across any foreign JC staff yet. Quite a few of various
ethnic groups, but none foreign.
And many ethnic groups are brought up in this country, with its lack
of work ethic. Shown the way to not work by other locals. :)
Funny how countries without a safety net of social security end up
having people working to survive.....

You must live way up in the back of beyond, try moving south a bit and see
how much you can get a flat for, even council flats in this area are more
than £50 pw. The average cost of rent for a 3 bed in this area is between
£650 £750 per month and you need a very large deposit plus you get ripped
off by estate agents admin charges for drawing up tennancy agreements, its
very expensive to live anywhere around London and you can forget about
living there, theres no way you could afford it.

£250 in the 80's was an average wage, knock tax NI and pay your CT, rent gas
water elec, pay for food etc, there wasnt a whole lot left, and if you run a
car, had a phone / internet and expect to put clothes on your kids, where
the fuck do you think £250 gross pay goes. But then you could live on that
amount without having to claim HB and with a bit of overtime you could tick
over quite nicely. Thanks to the cost of housing you cant do that any more.
The NMW works out less than what JSA/HB pays round here, unskilled people
are stuck on benefits for life.

The type of job is irrelevant, unskilled pay should be based on the current
cost of living. People shouldnt be forced to accept low paid work only to be
told you can still claim benefits, WTF is that about, why bother working
when there is no way you can escape from benefits but thats the way things
have gone in this crazy country.

OU, doing what exactly? what skills do they offer that an employer might be
interested in, still I suppose it cant be any worse than ND :)
