Which benefit?
Hi all,
I currently claim JSA.
I will have to go to hospital in 2 weeks time for chemotherapy. I have no
idea how long this treatement will last.
There is no way I will be fit for work while this is going on. What benefit
should I claim?
Thanks.

You should apply for Incapacity Benefit AND Income Support. If you don't
qualify for Incapacity (not paid enough N.I contributions in relevant tax
years), they will then look at your Income Support claim.
You will need a "sick note" from your doctor (G.P or consultant) to support
your claim to benefits due to illness.
Altough you can self certifacate yourself for the first 7 days of illness,
to avoid confusion and to make things as less complicated as possible i
would advise you get a sick note dated from or backdated from the date you
wish to claim the new benefits.
Ideally dated from the day after your JSA claim closes, this would stop you
losing any money.
HTH and good luck with your treatment

Best of luck with your treatment. You should ask at the hospital to
see if they have a benefits advisor to help you. You may also be able
to claim travel costs etc.
