sanctions
I am curious to know what the rules (ust the facts ma'am) regarding
losing JSA are. I want to know if the jobcentre can stop one's jsa
completely - legitimately or otherwise - and leave one with nothing to
live on. Thanks.

Yes, it's a common mistake that the DWP has to provide you with
something to live on no matter what.
They SHOULD follow the applicable benefit/allowance rules and consider
crisis loan applications fairly but if you don't qualify then your
hardship, starvation, freezing to death is not their problem. Don't
want to sound callous but there's no get out to give you extra just
because you were unlucky/careless/have a draughty house, cannot look
after your money, have a cute kid or look really sad. Plse don't
think that I'm implying any of these apply to you. Laws, regulations
and procedures no compassion or common sense.
They can sanction you for a number of reasons such as not taking a
suitable job or leaving a job without acceptable reasons, they can
also disallow your claim for not actively seeking.
Provided you have a live claim (if you don't sign your claim isn't
live) you can apply for hardship payments but unless you're considered
vulnerable there's a 14 day period with no payts and then upto a 40%
reduction.
There used to be a very clear leaflet re hardship payts which
specified the reduced rates of benefit and vulnerable groups. I don't
think you can claim retrospectively or for failing to sign if you're
thinking about your problem back in march.

Sorry mixed up my posters - the problem in March (failure to sign) was
Thunder Lords!

Re: sanctions
Thanks, but I don't feel any the wiser with mention of hardship
payments.
I'm not in this situation, though I will probably be claiming JSA in a
few weeks and forewarned is forearmed.
What is the deal with hardship payments then. Are you automatically
entitled to them, even at reduced rates/14 days wait?

The amount and when it is paid depends on circumstances. If you are
single, the general rule is 40% reduction and a 4 week "sanction" before
a Hardship Payment can be made.
There is no automatic entitlement, you have to undergo a separate
interview and basically have to be destitute to get them.
