Ron Hubbard's stuff was quite useful up until about 1980. Then the 
Scientologists discovered it was better to create dependency rather than 
cure it. For the techniques of Scientology/Dianetics here is something

I knew someone who seemed completely normal in everyway who dropped
out of Boalt Hall Law School and gave all his money to Scientology.
He now lives off the charity of friends, including myself.
How can people can fall for such a childish pseudo scientific scam
(ie, holding two tin cans attached to voltmeter = a e meter).  But
people fall for Nigerian scams.

People are tremendously simple beings from a psychological point of
view, so no.

Anyone can write a self-help book, or devise some therapy-technique
which works.

The E-meter, a skin galvanometer that anyone with a little knowledge

Hubbard was brilliant. Not only did he make a lot of money by
inventing Scientology, he also showed his contempt for the dimwits he
fooled into believing it and giving him all their money by making the

Hubbard really had style.

blew them up with nuclear bombs so that their disembodied souls stuck
to present day Earth dwellers and caused them all sorts of
psychological problems that only very expensive Dianetics can cure.
That is so fucking insane that if you believe it you deserve to be
fleeced of all your cash.

Although the Space Opera Teegeack crap isn't fed to the punters until
they have been through decades of Dianetics and been relieved of the
contents of their bank accounts plus all the money they can borrow. By

You can get a credit card, borrow and mortgage your house. There are
lots of ways people lacking immediate fluidity can get hold of money
to give to Scientology.
