Trying to save a playing field from developers
Hi,
Just wanted to let anyone interested know that I've started a blog
about trying to save an open space from being built on.
It's very basic right now, but I will add more information and photos
as the days go by.
thanks

In Oldham they're planning on knocking down several schools and
building some new ones
One will be built on some green space

But they'll be building on the old school space too so there'll be
less overall space.
Of course the thousands of new builds over the last 5 years have also
taken space - so the remaining open space is under more pressure from
the huge number of young people who have virtually no where left to
run round.
They're also planning on building on a town green near the football
pitch - Oldham's certainly losing open space.

You might find it useful to join forces with people all over the
country and get a nationwide pressure group going - if there isn't
already one.

Better start by trying to register it as village green under the 2006
commons act then.

Have you experience of that? What are the pros and cons of doing it,
and the costs?

Sort of, I think the charity I am a member of is the first case under
the new act.

No cons AFAICS but another member, and solicitor, is doing all the
donkey work, so I don't know the detail. I can find out but joining
OSS would be a better start.
The main thing in our case is we have bought the land and our remit is
to provide "air and recreation", in most cases it will be in adversity
to the landowner, so there will be a burden of proof needed that it
has been used for games and sports for more than 20 years, without the
permission of the landowner.
