With compression-type fittings as you've described you do need some play
in the pipework to allow the rad to be removed without loosening *both*
connections to the valve (which obviously means draining down or
stoppering the system. The older-fashioned 3/4" union types still required
some play, but less than the 15mm compression types do.

Yes, and dismantle it so you don't damage the rubber or fibre seal while
soldering.
