Ever talked yourself out of a job?
I had an interview recently with a small company looking to upgrade
from one version of a database to another.
I managed to convince them that they were way over-estimating the time
and expertise involved and that they could just do it themselves by
following the process I gave them in the interview. Therefore, saving
themselves quite a lot of money.

So, when you realise your interview is actually a fishing trip/free
consultation, what do you do? How do you deal with it?

Thanks.

Tell them the "what" but not the "how". Then if you don't get the
contract, phone them up in a few weeks time and ask how they're getting
on. Obviously any work you accept at this point will have to be at a
higher rate :-)

Be open with them and tell them the truth about what they need. You'll
lose this deal, for sure, but you may pick up future business with
them or their word-of-mouth friends.
