Question about payment for travelling time.
I'm asking the following questions on behalf of a colleague. YES,
really!
Could anyone in this NG tell me what the usual payment arrangement is
for self-employed contractors who, for a particular contract, normally
work from home but from time to time have to attend meetings with the
company for whom they are working, as well as with a number of other
companies in the UK and Europe?
The company for which he is hoping to work in a self-employed capacity
will, as part of the contract, require him to make a lot of occasional
liaison visits for meetings yet they are suggesting that he can only
claim payment for his actual working time on-site. This is surely not
correct.
Since travelling is only necessary in order to carry out the work
required by the contract, surely it is reasonable to claim for it, even
if not at the normal working hourly rate.
Does anyone know of a 'standard' T & C document suitable for
contractors that may be available from any of the professional bodies
and which might suggests how payment for travelling and for other
incidental expenses is normally calculated?
What is the best way for him to deal with this situation? Walking away
from the contract being offered is not his preferred option - at the
moment?
Many TIA,
- Dave
