Peterborough coming up!
In case anyone hasn't noticed it's Peterborough Beer Festival next week

The largest Camra branch festival in the country as far as I know organised
by the largest Camra branch.

More at

http://www.peterborough-camra.org.uk

Going down for the trade session Tuesday afternoon, Tuesday evening and
Wednesday evening also so should be good.

Doesn't seem to be anything on this weekend, but umpteen on Peterborough
weekend.

Guess I'll just have to go to Huddersfield, for a choice of 65+ beers all in
walking distance?

Clacton also. A very friendly affair.

On Sat lunchtime/afternoon there will be a top-rate jazz band (Kid
Tiddeman's all stars) As well as the usual wander in/out/round the town as
you please relaxation.

I think you have it right, Paul. I've always been a fan of itinerant
beer festivals - ie those that you create out of the pubs on offer in
your chosen location - rather than standing in some sports hall or
other civic venue. It would be a sad beer drinker who couldn't make
his own 'festival' in a town like Huddersfield.*

I'm quite surprised that CAMRA haven't capitalised on this. I reckon a
book of Pub Crawls in our major towns and cities would be a certain
winner.

(* having said that, I love the idea of the Huddersfield OctoberFest
in the local Sikh temple. It will be spectacular.)

Could be a real pain to keep up to date though.
Basic pubs offering regular beers fill the main portion, then you go onto
the guest stuff.
What you need is a publication that gives you the basics...
Yup GBG then you need an hourly update just to make sure you have the
right beer choices.
I'm sure we(*) could do the IT side, sadly I don't think anyone would feed
in the data.

Thanks for reminding me. I wasn't sure which weekend it is but Google
tells me it's the first - Thursday 1st to Saturday 3rd October. More
at <http://huddscamra.org.uk/oktoberfest/>. I really must make it
there this year!

I dont agree. I'm not talking about specific beers on offer, rather
pubs with a good reputation for quality beers. Many pubs have rotating
guests - of course it would be impossible to update this on a 24/7
basis but thats not what is required.

Nope (to add to your rather anachronistic Americanism) absolutely
not! The GBG is utterly useless for this purpose. It gives a selection
of some decent pubs in a given area, but these are often miles apart
and totally unsuitable for pub crawls. Far better are the local CAMRA
websites with specific crawls (eg
http://www.sheffieldcamra.co.uk/buscrawls.htm ) giving public
transport information in detail that the GBG could not possibly
manage. If all CAMRA branches provided itineraries covering their
major towns or suburbs, there would not be a problem.

Re: Peterborough coming up!
The Sheffield crawl on their website is very good, and it is excellent that
there are a series of really good pubs to aim at.

Other could do more - we're off to Norwich (from Peterborough) for the day
on Wednesday and the way the Norwich Branch lists pubs on line is not that
helpful/

Fortunately we will be armed with a fairly up to date Norwich Pub guide
which I went round and picked up from Paul Travis.

We're off to Cardiff in early September and the Cardiff Branch Website isn't
much use. I'm going to plot the GBG entries on a map, though frankly
Cardiff doesn't look up to much unless you like S A Braine's products
(which I do but not all the time!) Unless anyone knows different.

Paul Travis tells me no Cardiff Pub Guide since 1994!

You can get the GBG as a POI File for Tom Tom. I use it on my Nokia 6630.

There are limited opportunities in Cardiff for non-Brains ales.
Cathedral Road has 4 such outlets close to each other, and there are 6 or
7 Wetherspoons.

Not the biggest in numbers of different beers though-Nottingham had
over 600 last year and rumours are of a lot more this October.
Mind you once it's over 60 different ones it's difficult to try them
all :-)
