leicester info please
Need to stay in or near - again!

Would prefer pub with accommodation, parking and nice choice of beers
- local micros especially.

Any recommendations?

When you've seen one shopping centre you've seen a mall.

I can't think of a pub with decent beer and accommodation or parking in
Leicester. I'm glad I live with walking distance of the city centre
because parking is a nightmare. I can't really comment about
accommodation beyond saying that the usual budget chains can be found
in the city centre and very little that is any better.

There hasn't been a lot of change on the pub scene since the 2009 Good
Beer Guide was put together so that is a good starting point for pubs.
Your best bets would be, ion no particular order

VIN IV, (formerly Out of the Vaults) King Street/New Walk. Good range of
micros, some local ales, most often from Belvoir Brewery.

Criterion, Millstone Lane. Beers from Rugby Brewery and a good range of
guests from micros.

Swan & Rushes, Infirmary Square/Oxford Street. A couple of beers from
Batemans and guests from micros often including local Langton and
Belvoir Breweries.

Globe, Silver Street. Probably the best Everards pub in the city and a
lovely building.

Ale Wagon, Rutland Street/Charles Street. Hoskins Bros beers brewed at
Tower Brewery, Burton (which isn't all that far away) and guests.

High Cross, High Cross Street. Wetherspooons, beers from Shardlow or
Langton often to be found here.

And a little further out the Western, Western Road. Steamin' Billy beers
brewed at Tower and guests.

There's a map at http://www.leicestercamra.org.uk/LeicesterPubs2.shtml
Some of the descriptions of the other pubs there are out of date. Note
particularly that the Gateway is no longer run by Tynemill and is
currently closed.

Bells were running the Queen Victoria and the Gateway for a while. Both
are now closed. Not sure if the brewery is still operational.

Thanks for replies about pubs but still looking for pub with
accommodation.

Any suggestions about nearby towns or villages then?

You might consider the Swan in the Rushes, Loughborough (http://
www.swanintherushes.co.uk/index_files/Page594.htm). Castle Rock
Brewery owned with a good reputation. Loughborough is a short train
journey to Leicester.

Just checked their web site. It's no longer there. So it looks like they
are no more. (I've let quaffale know.)

Oh wow glad to hear that's still there. It used to be my old regular
when I was at Loughborough uni in the late 80s.

It was a lifesaver one year I think 90 near xmas, I went back there to
see some friends and the snow came & took out the power to that area.

The town was nearly deserted throughout the day without electric.

One pub we managed to find open had some bottles, then closed soon
after - by 3pm we were desparate and it was getting dark.

We walked past the Swan, to see some dim light inside and popped our
heads round the door.

It was candle-lit, a full fire was going and very busy - RA handpumps
were the only available option, but I bet he made a killing that day,
we stayed till the end !

Amazing atmosphere (but don't mention the war ;-)

Cheers for the reminder - Neil
