Still some proper pubs about ....
Visited my favourite pub of all time on holiday recently :-

If only all pubs had rules like this - I'd probably start using them
regularly again.
Hardly visit pubs at all ATM :-(

Re: Still some proper pubs about ....
Now, before we went across this time, we heard all
kinds of nasty stories about the state of the pub
in England. Pubs closing, etc.
But I gotta say ... In West Yorks, in the Yorks Dales,
we found ALL our regular pubs to be in good nick.
The Holme valley pubs, esp. The Fleece, The Old
Bridge, and The Nook were every bit as good as in
prior years. The White Lion and The Old Silent
in and around Haworth are still great. And in
Hawes, The Fountain and The Crown both had good
beer and good food.
In fact, the landlord at The Nook told us of the
many lager louts who were being converted to
the real stuff. Cheers and all.
After all the nasty news, we were very relieved to
find things as we left them.

Good pubs that believe in customer service are still very busy. Pubs
that offer nothing in the way of customer service and beer that people
want to drink are closing. Companies that ran estates of pubs for their
property values alone are also in trouble.
This is the era when those companies and landlords who believed that the
public owed them a living are getting a reality check. Serve lacklustre
'branded' beer in mediocre condition or treat every person that enters
the bar as the invisible person and custom will flock to your doors - or
not :)
In general, the pubs around my way that have closed will not be mourned
except maybe they will be converted for other usage rather than being
sold on to someone could make a go of them (assuming they have the
freedom of choice for supply) .
I guess that things may get worse before they get better. The trade is
now starting to attract those inexperienced in business to the no hope
pubs.

The pubs that are going broke are the town centre pubs that can't compete
with the VDEs and won't put on decent food or live music.

Personally, I'd put a regularly changing selection of well kept ales, and
good conversation, above either of the above.
Decent bread with decent cheese is all I desire with a pint, although I
appreciate how difficult it is nowadays to acquire either!

Where I live it isn't difficult to find either.
What is difficult to find is a town centre landlord who doesn't think the
world owes him a living and resents having to provide anything but gassy keg
beer, high alcohol lager for the kiddies and the cheapest Tesco ham in a
dead cheap Tesco bap served with a jar of Tesco 'own brand' mustard.
