What to Expect in Yorks??
Coming across for our yearly trek thru Yorkshire
and am wondering what ales to expect. Last couple of
trip there were many more blondes than expected (or
wanted). Are they still pouring OP, RamTam, and
RiggWelter?? Dark Milds??
We will be in the Holme Valley, then up to Haworth,
and on to Hawes (for access to the Dales). What
can we expect??

Hang on, didn't you just post this on 29th March (or something very
similar)?
Get yourself a Good Beer Guide. Look at CAMRA's website (and go to the
sites of the local branches). That will give you all the information
you could possibly need.

Yes it's a similar question (though more specifically looking for dark
beers) - hardly constitutes spamming or anything though. Agree on the
advice to buy a GBG though, even if it doesn't always have accurate
info about specific beers available, often useful tips like "always
serves cask mild", etc.
It's a bit quiet in here, I'm afraid :~) you might have more luck in
one of the Yahoo Groups like
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/cask-uk/ (general cask group)
&
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/scoopgen/ (beer "scoopers"/"tickers"
group)

Maybe when we get there, but there were not plentiful
where we were last trip. Certainly unobtainium here
in Durham. Prolly not when we land at Heathrow. And
the GBG does not exist here in NC.
This is NOT spam.
I am TRYING to get a feel for what non-blonde ales
(only on the pump) I can look for in Yorkshire.
Used to love the Waggon and Hosses in Oxenhope.
Last time thru they had "fruity" beers only. Big
downer.
Just looking for a few suggestions for "traditional"
Yorkshire hand-pulled real ales. If you can't help,
I really understand.

Re: What to Expect in Yorks??
There are a lot of golden ales on bar tops in Yorkshire at the moment
admittedly.
You could try the Grove Inn at Huddersfield
http://www.groveinn.co.uk/
The Cricketers at Keighley
No website of their own but it's at
http://www.beerintheevening.com/pubs/s/24/24052/Cricketers_Arms/Keighley
Those two seem to make a point of stocking darker more beery types
The Fleece at Haworth still stocks the full range of taylors beers although
the guest beer has gone.
The Worth Valley Railway usually lists the beers on any weekend on the
website
www.kwvr.co.uk, and we stock beers other than golden ones - if your
travelling on it let me know that date.
When are you coming over? If it's shortly there may be the odd beer fest as
well. There seem to be a few about at the moment.
Don't know much about Hawes I'm afraid but you could try the Moorcock at
Garsdale (1 mile from the Settle-Carlisle line station)

Thanks for all that info Paul. We leave the US on April
29th for about 2 weeks, divided equally in Holmfirth,
Haworth, and Hawes. We will take the stroll from Haworth
to Oxenhope and back, and so shall at least stop in at
the K&WVRR stations at Oxenhope, Haworth, and Oakworth.
Is the Moorcock the pub that used to be a brewpub, and now
gets it's ales from the ex-publican who still brews??

Re: What to Expect in Yorks??
Yes the Moorcock was a brew pub , then the brewery moved into an industrial
unit in Hawes. It has now ceased brewing according to the 2009 GBG
You might like to consider visiting Hebden Bridge if you are in the area.
The scenery is similar to Haworth and Heptonstall village is more like
Haworth used to be when he Brontes were still alive.
Moyles is the current Halifax and Calderdale Camra Pub of the year and does
accommodation too, Pretty good value too at the current rate of exchange.
They have 4 guests plus 1 regular (Pictish Brewer's gold)
Their website is http://www.moyles.com/ though it doesn't seem to be working
at the moment. will have to find out why!

Have been to Hebden Bridge before, on the way from Holmfirth to
Haworth, and looked for Moyles. Never found it. Can you give
me some directions? Hebden Bridge is along our trip from
Holmfirth to Haworth this trip as well.

If you come into Hebden Bridge from the Halifax direction the road forks and
, if you are travelling to Haworth and the KWVR, you are instructed to turn
right. However you must keep on the A646 towards Todmorden for about
another 400yds. Then you come to a set of traffic lights, straight on at
those and Moyles is on the right opposite the marina. If you get to the
cinema you have gone to far. The Railway, which is an older pub is next
door (sells Tetleys and Castle Rock Harvest Pale).
Their website is on again and the map is at http://www.moyles.com/location/

Re: What to Expect in Yorks??
Hey Paul, seems like several trips back we were in
Hebden Bridge looking for a pub called Fox and Goose
(or maybe Fox and Hound??). Does that ring any bells??
In any case, we will try both Moynes and The
Railway early in May.
cheers

Re: What to Expect in Yorks??
The Fox and Goose is about 500 yds west of Hebden Bridge town centre along
the main road towards Todmorden.
It has four guest beers and a house beer called Margerys Tiddlywink which is
brewed by Millstone brewery.
Quality sadly not what it was but on the right day it can be worth a visit.
Website at http://www.foxale.co.uk/
Another 400 yds further on is the Stubbing Wharf, by the canal. Its a pub
co pub (cant remember which one) . Fairly good selection of beers and a
website at
http://www.stubbingwharf.com/
On the hills above HB is the New Delight which is the home of the
Bridestone's Brewery. Probably best reached by the E bus which runs every
hour from the centre of Hebden Bridge (Nr Moyles). {Can't find a website
for them}
We also have another brewery - Little Valley which produces a range of
organic beers
their beers are stocked in one or two of the local pubs.
