Castle at Bradofrd
Another subject
A friend of mine knows the landlord of the Castle Hotel at Bradford - it's a
pretty good pub specialising in real ale. He tells me that they are planning
to have a beer festival in the pub sometime around the end of April - I will
definitely post when it is nearer the time.
Anyway they put a poster up in the pub inviting regulars to suggest beers
for inclusion. Some of the local camra branch came in and told them off for
having a beer festival "without authorisation"
They have been told they will not be considered for any awards in future.
I wonder who these people think they are? They must be under one hell of a
misconception if they think that a publican has to ask permission from them
to have a beer festival in their own pub. Wonder if JDW asked if they could
have one in the Titus Salt next month?
Anyone got any comments.

As a CAMRA member since 1973, I find this quite inexplicable.
Maybe someone from the branch covering Bradford would like to comment.

Paul Rigg - this is a disgraceful post. You are obviously not a CAMRA
member, otherwise you would realise that any local CAMRA branch would
never issue such sanctions against a local pub.
You really ought to be aware of all the facts before you make such
postings. It's all very well for blaming 'a friend' for this, Perhaps
that 'friend' should put his/her money where his/her mouth is rather
than relying on you to put your foot in it on his/her behalf.
Check the facts. Did the pub in question put a CAMRA logo on its
publicity material, in which case, they ought to get permission? Did
the local CAMRA branch members speak on behalf of the branch? Have you
checked with the Bradford CAMRA branch before posting your comments?
Your post doesn't help the Castle, it doesn't help the local CAMRA
branch and it most certainly doesn't help you.

Sadly, I think YOu are in the wrong, here, M Platting.
There are indeed people who are CAMRA members who will go around
telling licensees all sorts of things, whilst pupporting to represent
the branch. Not all members are honourable. And not all members are
branch officers - and how would licesees know who was speaking
officially?
we have had too many reports of such things lately.
eg a member told one licensee he would not be allowed to be in the
GBG because his pub was up for sale. Landlord very upset.
A pub-brewer had another pub-brewer, a CAMRA member, quizzing him
about his recipes and brewing - and felt he had to answer because it
was CAMRA. Said brewer very upset.
and there's more which I won't bore you with.
Don't generalise! Or make pronouncements on behalf of others you have
no right to represent.
Or you are as bad as the people Paul Rigg is complaining about!!!

My point is that before making such a post, Mr Rigg should perhaps
have contacted the local branch to ascertain the facts.
Yes, I'm sure you're right and these CAMRA members were merely loose
cannons saying things they really shouldn't. No pub needs to get CAMRA
approval before holding its own beerfest. You know that, I know that,
but there may be people out there who don't.
Many people will read Mr Rigg's post and think 'what a draconian and
appaling organisation CAMRA is that it should pontificate in such a
fashion. I'm certainly not going to join an organisation that behaves
like that' Not very good for the cause.

Dear me, what an argument
My source is extremely reliable however I will find out exactly what
happened . I too have heard other examples of this sort of thing going on
like Chris,
My source is already planning to write to Tyke Taverner over this so there
will be a branch reply I'm sure.

Various possibilities exist:
1. Unfounded rumour.
2. People pretending to be CAMRA members
3. CAMRA members who are idiots (we have all walks of life so the idiots
are in there somewhere)
4.The pub used a CAMRA logo or something of CAMRA copyright on the advert
and thus was breaking the law.
