Sorta OT: UK Rental Cars
We are about to make our annual springtime trek
to the pubs of West Yorks and the Yorks Dales,
starting in Holmfirth and Huddersfield, and
moving up thru Haworth and Hawes, and into
Askrigg.

We land early am at Heathrow, get our car, and
up the M1 to the winding roads of Yorks.

Many of the cars we used to rent don't seem to
be listed in the rental companies we use. We
want a small small car that will handle the M1
as well, but what the heck is a Chevy Aveo??
IS that a rebranded DaeWoo???? Is it any good
at all?

Hoping to find a small Ford (was it a Festiva??)
with a diesel, or a Nissan Micra, or a Fiat
Punto, all cars we have had in the past. Are these
still available in the UK??

thanks 'n all

I think a Ford Ka would do the trick & yes, I think the Chevys are
rebranded Daewoos - I would guess you might be missing a bit of
motorway acceleration on the base model?

Vauxhall Astra or Ford Focus are a little bit bigger, I don't know if
they'd hire diesel models (diesel is about 10p/litre more expensive at
the moment here too).

Enjoy your trip,
cheers

I think the Aveo is the small car to the Matiz's mini.

You don't need acceleration on a motorway. M-way driving is all about
anticipating.

But it goes further on a litre and the diesel engine is what you need
for he M-way, pulls like a train up hill and down dale and is far
better suited to trundling along on country roads without having to
use the gear lever too often. Diesels are far more common in the hire
fleets than they used to be.

Might I suggest using the A1 road to get to Yorkshire? I find it
rather less manic than the M1 despite being "only" a dual carriageway
with roundabouts for sizable portions and it also has some old
coaching inns if you feel the need to be distracted...

We have taken the A1 back down in the past.

But when I first land, I want to get up North
to a Yorkshire pint just as fast as I can.
On the way back, I can dawdle.

I come across lots more unexplained and unwarranted
holdups on the A roads. The M1 seems to run better
unless they are busy unproving it.

And what is wrong with a pint of John Smith Smooth in the airport bar :)

Um .... what is wrong is that it is John Smith Smooth.

I prefer something dark, with hops and with malt. I head
North for a Riggwelter, for some dark Milds, for
Old Peculiar as well.

Hmm, only "John Smiths", "Smooth" and "airport bar". That leaves nothing
wrong with "in the".
