OT - Feeling nostalgic
The Calgary Stampede started this morning with a big parade that usually
takes over 2 hours to pass by.
http://cs.calgarystampede.com/

I didn't bother going - too much hokey, pseudo-western, hollywoodised hoo-ha
that will envelope the city for 10 days! However, there are always heavy
horses in the parade but they are always Belgians, Percherons or perhaps the
odd pair of Clydesdales, never Suffolks.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Suffolk_Punch

When I was a kid, many farms around my village had some of these and I often
saw them being shod at the village blacksmith's. Even though most of the
ploughing was done using tractors, farmers still used horses to plough a
series of guide furrows for the tractors to follow as they were always dead
straight. Now they are an endangered breed.

IIRC, I remember you went a couple of years ago and some woman in the
southern hemisphere had a go at you about it.

Yes indeed. Was hard work at harvest-time though.

The Vancouver humane soc wants calf roping banned but the Calgary HS is OK
with it. At this time of the year, we get all the hair-shirted,
birkenstock-wearing, "rabid" vegetarian, people-hating crowd coming out of
the woodwork and demanding that the rodeo be stopped. They appear again at
Thanksgiving and xmas extolling veggie alternatives to turkey.

I'm a carniverous wearer of Birkenstocks and I quite like rodeos! Have
you ever tried Tofurkey? Once was enough!

I'm not particularly fond of turkey so I can safely say that I will never
share your experience!
I went to the Stampede rodeo last year, curtesy of the oil company where I
was working on contract. I like it too, even though I can't understand why
anyone would want to try bull-riding! The prize money is substantial - the
winners in each class taking $100k.

Following up to James Silverton
