Here's for the last of the allotment tomatoes... haven't been hearing much
of the allotment lately.

I have eaten those imported Dutch tomatoes and they are bad. One of the
workmen must have thrown out a sandwich into my neighbors' garden and up
came a plant with tomatoes exactly like those winter red balls. Know what?
Even after a hot and sunny Italian summer they tasted of nothing.

Am I correct in thinking that the best tomatoes come from Italy? And
that they are the plum variety?

Those are best for one purpose only-- making sauces. There are many great
tomatoes and each is good for something. Right now my cherry tomatoes are
incredible.

I wish that I had time and energy to grow them in this awful British

Though we can grow home tomatoes, I am looking at the long term for
Italian cooking.

Which is not all that much about great fresh tomatoes, but if you want sweet
tomatoes, the surest type is the cherry or grape tomato, because their size
allows them to ripen with less time and sun than larger ones. Those are the
ones the Pugliese can truck up here all winter. They use polythene covers
through the coldest which might help those in darker colder climes.

is it so terrrible? I find the places with 40c heat far more intolerable
than a bit of rain. And plenty of crops thrive in our climate like broad
beans, especially if you cook them very young as they do in places like
spain.

For people who are sensitive to light it is a terrible climate. I suppose
that over the eons many of them have been weeded out since they don't thrive
and succeed, but people who produce the right brain chemicals irregardless
of light will never understand.

yes, Carols a bit like like that. I actually prefer clouds in the sky,
storms and snow to inescapable heat. But we are all different. Its probably
due to my descent from wild eyed, plaid wrapped highland warriors and
pillaging norseman , I may be overplaying this a bit?
Today there is mist rising from the ground, I love it like that.

If you grow Sweet Millions along a fence or net I believe that will be as
good as it gets in the UK. They are occasionally too sweet and can taste as
if you have sugared them, but as with all cherry tomatoes, cooking them
alters that, so don't overcook. Yesterday's recipe I blogged was cherry
tomatoes with fresh mozzarella done in 15 minutes.

Never with the tiny ones. If the skins bother you, put it through a
foodmill. Takes 2 seconds. The skins are a bit sturdier this time of year
when the nights are cool, but they don't bother me because they are small
and don't cook long enough to make those quill things.

it should be fine then. I had a cold garlic gazpacho in cordoba with peeled
grapes in it, the peeling made quite a difference in that context.
