Visiting atm but hoping to get a bit less busy here! We're going away for a
short break next week, then it's back to very early Christmas shopping as we
go away on 31 October for 5 weeks. And we have a friend staying and a
family birthday before the end of Oct. so it's the usual chaos here. I see
everyone is still talking in the most mouth-watering way here!

No, it's today. We had our invitation by email about ten days ago. It
starts in the Field Kitchen at 11am, Guy will 'say a few words' at about 12
and then weather permitting, he'll take those want to do it on a tour of the
farm. We shan't be able to do the latter but we're going to the book
launch. The nibbles at the launch will be from recipes from the book.

We don't know yet because it's only just been published!! Keep up at the
back there! ;-)) It's interesting, however, because it's by the head of
the biggest organic farming co-operative in Europe. Guy Watson and his wife
also started Riverford Field Kitchen which serves only their organic produce
and in season. They'd visited somewhere in California, called Chez Panisse,
owned by Alice Water and came back determined to do something similar here.
They had a lot of difficulty with planning permission because of narrow
lanes etc. but they've done it. According to American friends we took
there, it's not as luxurious as the American one but the principles - and
the delicious food - are along the same lines.
http://www.chezpanisse.com/
Riverford Farm, as a whole, was started by pere Watson and is now run by the
whole family, each taking on a different 'department' but their interests
aren't confined to Devon.

I do! ;-)) Actually, it always gets quieter at this time of year which is
why we've chosen the end of Oct to go to New Zealand!

And the food was *fantastic*! We have bought some copies of the book,
signed by Guy, which will be Christmas presents. What is interesting is
that there are various bits of background to the whole Watson philosophy and
there are some tips on growing veg., too. As Guy said in his talk, more and
more people are now growing their own food, which means less profit for the
veg. box business but is in line with their beliefs! One story that filled
me with disgust was of his early approaches about 20 years ago, to a
supermarket to whom he hoped to start selling his organic veg. He rang
their head office to see if he could meet someone and they suggested
Thursday. As he was going to be in London on Friday, Guy asked if they
could make it Friday instead and the phone went dead. He rang back saying
"I'm sorry but I think we were cut off". The man at the other end said "No,
sonny, when we say 'jump', you jump." Guy went out and started pulling down
his embryonic packing shed!

Oh, that's right but it must have been a real knockback when he was just
getting going 20 years ago. I don't think you could call him a 'corporation
man' and good for him!
