What's up with Shrewsbury
Apart from being the birth place of Charles Darwin.
I've got two recipes (1658, 1808)[1] for something called "Shrewsbury cake"
(which do not share exactly the same ingredients) and a quick google
found "Simnel cake" which is from Shrewsbury but nothing like
the "Shrewsbury cake".

Does anyone have more info on what and why of Shrewsbury cake?

Good info though.

Yes. I just noticed I had an older recipe on my site, than the one she
refers to. Nothing more than that intended.

As I said, I just happened to notice that one of my recipes were older.
I didn't mean anything else with the comment. Still good information on the
Shrewsbury cake.

I started making it from a St.Delia recipe. It's basically a gravy made
with the drippings plus a bit of flour, some mustard, Worcester, lemon
juice, red wine and red currant jelly.
Son #1 hates lamb but insists I make it with the xmas turkey (use cranberry
jelly). I make it with crabapple jelly to go with pork.
Do you want the recipe?

From a St. Delia recipe in a 1995 Sainsbury Mag (Phew! where has the time
gone?) but probably also available on her website.

I'd be very surprised if it is not demanded every time you roast lamb{:-)

2 level tbsp plain flour
1 heaped tsp mustard powder
1 pint/~500ml red wine (use a softish one such as a merlot)
5 rounded tbsp Tiptree redcurrant jelly
3 tbsp worcester sauce
Juice of 1 lemon (I reckon 1/2 a lemon is plenty)

While the roast rests, spoon off most of the fat from the pan but leave
~2tbsp. Over direct heat, stir in the flour and mustard to form a paste
that has used up all the juices. Add the wine a little at a time stirring
and then whisking to incorporate. Then add the jelly and W/sauce, whisking
until the jelly has dissolved. Simmer for 15 minutes to reduce slightly
then serve with the lamb.
Lemon juice: She says add it with the jelly and W/sauce. I did this once
and the sauce was too sharp but that may have been because I was using my
own, home-made RC jelly, which had a very intense (and sharp) flavour.
Other times it worked when I was using a good commercial jelly.

I've made it with crabapple jelly for pork and cranberry jelly for turkey.

Dammit!! After typing out the above, I checked Delia's site and it's there!
