Good buffet restaurants
I'm thinking of setting up a website, drawing upon local knowledge,
describing good Sunday buffet Indian restaurants.
Most of the buffet restaurants (good and bad) don't advertise their Sunday
offerings very well and its very difficult to know where the buffet
restaurants are in a particular area - whether you're a local or not.
I want at least 10 to 12 for each county - more for Surrey, London, Glasgow
and other large counties/cities.
Prices change regularly (always upwards) and it will be impossible to give a
completely accurate account - there's very little that's available for less
than £6.95 (under a year ago there were at least a few places offering
decent wares for under £5).
There are some gems out there but I'm not prepared to share my knowledge of
them unless others do the same - why increase their trade, limit table
availability and increase prices further through a (studied) recommendation
unless there's something in it for everyone.
Believe me though - there are some real gems waiting to be discovered out
there.
Gareth.

Sunday buffet very nice last time I was there about 6 months ago.
One of the best Sunday Buffets I have had the pleasure of eating is at KAMA
http://www.kamaindia.com/ A long way to go but I had to mention it. Prices
lower than typical UK curry house, food tastes as good as best UK curry
house, by far the largest selection of dishes at any Sunday buffet I've ever
tried. My visit was approx two and a half years ago.
I'd be interested in any recommendations for Surrey, Kent, Hampshire areas

Kama is a bit far to go although if I'm ever in the neighbourhood I will
look it up (how sad is that?)
Hampshire doesn't have much to offer in the way of buffet restaurants - I
have looked. In fact, over the years, the number of restaurants offering
buffet has decreased (there used to be a few good ones in Portsmouth and
Southampton. You might find one or two in Southampton depending on market
conditions and fads but they aren't much cop). The main resource (positively
reviewed by Pat Chapman) is Cafe Tusk in Fareham. My own experience of the
place is that it is too expensive for what you get - £13 or £14 per person
for an evening buffet meal is silly. Iirc Pat Chapman referred to a £5 or
£5.95 price in (?) Spice Business. I don't know where he got this price
from - even the lunch buffet is £7 per person. The lack of local competition
makes this pricing possible - and the service is, imho, not too great
either. Neither is the food. Don't take the promise of "60 dishes" too
seriously unless you count cucumber on a plate as a dish.
Surrey (ignoring London) has a few Sunday buffet restaurants but not as many
as I would have thought: there's a couple in West Byfleet (with Haweli being
the best value for money - the price, last time I checked, was £5.95. The
food is a bit bland but the service is friendly. It was £4.95 until recently
but I didn't visit much more when the price raised to £5.95). Camberley has
a decent one - in London Road (I can't find the name but as there's only one
in London Road more or less opposite Sandhurst it shouldn't be too tricky to
find. £6 again iirc). Not much in Guildford worth mentioning and not much in
Woking: Jaipur offers a buffet but it's pretentious and I don't think even
worth £8 - some people love the place but I can't stand it for some reason -
cocky and sarcastic waiters and poor food may have something to do with it;
Binaka is one that I haven't been to for a while - it was £8 per person last
time I was there. It's okay but you feel a bit conscious of taking too much
food - the staff were a little bit too attentive in a formal kind of way.
There one in Cobham which is worth a visit - can't remember the name but
I'll dig it out if anyone is interested. Oh yes, it's called Kismet.
Relaxed, friendly and stonking food too. There's a good buffet restaurant in
Staines called the Shahee Mahal. It's a 7 day a week buffet with price
differentials depending on time of day/week. It's good. It used to be a
fantastic Indian restaurant non buffet style - by far the best Indian food I
have ever tasted and consistently so. Then the standards dropped, they lost
customers and now it claims to be under new management. The buffet food is
good - £8.95 though iirc and more on Friday and Saturday.
I would be grateful for any more tips regarding Surrey and Hampshire -
although to be honest I don't expect much if anything from this group in
terms of feedback (it used to be great - what happened?)

Both Cranleigh's Indian restaurants, the Curry Inn and the Cardamon,
have Sunday lunchtime buffets. The quality of the food and range of
dishes are unremarkable at both restaurants. IIRC, the price is £7-95 a
head, with poppadums, drinks and coffee all extra.

Thank you John. Yes, it's about par for the course.
The Cobham restaurant I mentioned is worth checking out although the extras
are, well, extra.

There aren't any restaurants offering buffets around here.

Possibly the arrival of widespread broadband and lots more people
going online but using forums - the majority don't seem to be aware of
newsgroups.
This has been discussed on a couple of ng.s to which I subscribe.
Personally I prefer ng.s

Some ISPs don't offer Usenet access ... or don't offer it with
all bundles ...
only the "techies" will go *looking* for Usenet (or those of us
who started a decade ago when the WWW was terminally slow on dial-up)

I don't know - I thought one or two other similar groups in the uk.food
hierarchy were doing a bit better until I took a look: the "chinese" group -
I can't find a single post there at all (just spam). The real ale group is
doing well though. But the profile of most real ale fans would, I suspect,
tend to make them more likely to use Usenet.
Maybe Usenet is as an inaccessible resource. But OE and Windows Mail/Live
Mail feature pretty good news readers.
I think the point is though that, given the popularity of Indian food in the
UK, this group should be more popular than it is.
Actually, there isn't a huge amount of discussion even on web based
services - most of the groups are focussed on special interests (making the
perfect onion based sauce for example).

I think maybe it takes a certain type of person to enjoy newsgroups. I
understand uk.rec.sheds (I think that's its title) has a huge volume of
traffic.
I used to subscribe to a local newsgroup but it seems that they tend to
attract a lot of flaming and general nastiness. I've heard that people
generally expect newsgroups to be like that, too.
I've changed my news server (news.individual) and now ufdi is available
to me again but for a number of years ufdi wasn't available from my ISP
where other ngs were.

The sheddi are a strange bunch, though, with some very, err,
idiosyncratic, conventions. You should try UKRM for a high-volume,
purely on-topicm newsgroup ecperience.
