It was me.

It's actually cheaper to get someone to go down the shops in Bombay and then
courier it to the UK than pay that much.

I'll ask my son the find out how much they cost. I _think_ he's still
in India. He went there for Christmas - last year...!!

A friend works in Bombay - if you like I could ask him to find one and
bring it with him next time he comes home. Would you have to pay import
duty on this?

I live in Bombay for part of the year.

Our old grinder died and we needed a new one in the spring of this year.

We got a friend to buy one and send it here to the UK, plus we also bought
a Kenwood food processor to see if that would do the job.

The Summet cost about £30 plus £25 courier fees. We didn't get a bill for
duty or VAT but if we had done I imagine it would have been about 25% of the
purchase cost.

The Kenwood is a huge complicated 900 watt thing that came with dozens of
parts.

So far it has done all we've asked of it...

But we haven't used it for wet grinding yet...

Much less than the price of the website one I agree.

It's possibly not quite as simple as that.

I'm an electrical engineer.

On looking inside the old grinder that had gone wrong I was reasonably
dismayed to see that the internal construction does not meet UK electrical
safety standards by a very long way indeed.

You can't sell an electrical appliance in the EC without some sort of
conformance certificate, and getting a Sumeet grinder up to that level
would probably entail a couple of hours work by an electrical fitter and a
reasonably large handful of bits, assuming you were set up to do such work.

It's not a product I'd care to import in any quantity, and Indian
manufacturers don't seem inclined to do special production runs of small
electrical appliances for EC consumption, as I found out after a similar
experience with an electric tandor oven...

and I believe they (Sumeet) have a poor name in after sales service,
especially outside of India, if things go wrong (and they do if you
google), maybe the cheap and nasty works out to be just nasty.
