Arh, yes, Roger, the twisted ankle Expedition, but I'll not mention it too
loud.

Strangely, a few weeks later I twisted my ankle in a near by park, the first
time I twisted an ankle in 30 years. Later on I re-twisted it again a few
weeks before the Scottish Borders Expedition.

I quite often turn my ankle over but I can usually get my weight off
that leg before doing any real damage. It seems a bigger problem now
than it was when I was young and low cut modern boots don't give as much
protection as the old fashioned clod hoppers.

Ah, but my current opinion is that clod-hopping boots, whilst

I've decide that one reason I am vulnerable to turning an ankle is
that I spend all my working life in full ankle length protective
boots, I surmise that the support these offer means I've lost strength
in my ankles. I also think this is why I cannot walk barefoot on any
but the softest of surfaces.

I see I've been caught by thread drift, I've noticed a few familiar
posters disappear over the years and wonder what's happened to them.

I am waiting for an NHS appointment at the "Appliance clinic" where
they are going to fit me (or maybe my shoes!) with insoles to try to
correct the way I walk which (in my opinion) causes the pain in my
knees. This was my GP's response to me presenting with knee pain.
What I really wanted was a trip to a sports injury clinic and, as I've
now waited two months and am getting bored, I think I may pay for that
myself anyway.

What I really want is for an expert to analyse the way I walk/run in
boots, shoes, trail shoes, trainers, sandals and bare feet and to see
if I need corrective footwear or, perhaps, strengthening or stretching
exercises. Maybe this is what the clinic will do?

It seemed slightly tasteless to continue posting in the "DF is dead"
thread so I have renamed it. This thread made me wonder if I should
leave a list of newsgroups with my will so that the executor can tell
everyone that I'm dead - but what would be the point if I wasn't
around to see if anyone had missed me?!

That's down to having spent a lifetime wearing footwear, so your feet
have never toughened up (I suppose "naturally" the soles would be
massive calluses).

Hi Judith

Hope you're well?

Have you ever had a gait analysis?

With walking boots/trail shoes/etc I don't see the point BUT it could
help?
With running it is essential IMHO. Locally, I've been to Advance
Performance and using Gait analysis matched the running shoes with my
running style. Time well spent.

With respect to ankle support, I agree with one of the other
comments. I now only ever wear boots in the Winter and then only as a
last resort. In the past year my troublesome left ankle has improved
to the point of zero pain, this I believe is the combination of
running an walking - past 1,000 miles for the year last week (at least
two-thirds of that running).
