OT: DC Sniper execution date set
http://edition.cnn.com/2009/CRIME/09/16/dc.sniper.execution/index.html
(CNN) -- A November 10 execution date was set Wednesday for John Allen
Muhammad, convicted in a series of sniper-style shootings that terrorized
the Washington area in 2002.
Prince William County, Virginia, Circuit Judge Mary Grace O'Brien set the
date at a teleconference hearing Wednesday, according to the Web site of
Muhammad's attorney, Jonathan Sheldon.
Prosecutors had requested a November 9 execution date. That date is a
Monday, Sheldon wrote in an e-mail to CNN.
"I pointed out that while I did not necessarily object to Monday, Nov. 9,
executions are usually scheduled for Thursdays, and that often unpredictable
events occur the day before an execution requiring action by the courts or
governor, or others," he wrote.
"I asked that the execution be on a Tuesday so that government offices would
be open the day prior to the execution. The [attorney general] did not
object to this and the judge stated that it was a good idea."
On the Web site, Sheldon said he will file an appeal with the U.S. Supreme
Court in October and ask Virginia Gov. Tim Kaine for clemency.

Well, an appeal for clemency is worth a try I suppose....
Fox says the execution is due on 9 November. I suppose it won't make much
difference on the 11th.

All this bickering over days simply misses one big point. I use a
calendar that has a day of the week on it that no one else knows about.
This could have helped Muhammed enormously, he could have chosen such a
day and then simply disappeared from the records. I don't know why no
one has thought of it before.

If weekdays became that tricky they could just start drawing straws each
day. Repeat until short straw drawn. That would add a spice of
unpredictability too. A bit like the Japanese way of doing it where they
just come for you without telling you when.
It would be twisted if he got a firing squad, would it?
