I do wonder how it would have been perceived had it not been America but
Russia, China, Iran or North Korea deliberately crashing things into the
moon ? I'd bet terms like "provocative" and "threat" would be spotted in
some headlines and briefings.

Who gave the US permission to simply throw things at the moon as she feels
like ? What right do they have to do that ? I thought this was a 'common
treasury' protected by international treaty. It does look somewhat like
wanton vandalism to me.

Are we now set to see a new 'arms race' as each country sets about getting
the biggest bang out of such assaults on the moon in a battle to show 'who's
the daddy' ?

Did you ever see the new "The Time Machine" film? Where the accidentally
blow up the moon?

Quite well done that. And also the classic "Space 1999".

When it comes to splatting planetary bodies, NASA are still lagging far
behind Britain's best efforts with our remarkable success of Beagle 2. No
settling on easy to pick targets 'next door' when it comes to our boffins
;-)

For fictional inter-planetary splatting, I reckon you can't beat the Bugs of
Klendathu from "Starship Troopers".

Anyway, let's just hope we don't stir some alien lifeform we don't know
about on the moon and give them their own unprovoked 9-11 they seek to
avenge. It is somewhat arrogant and morally dubious to be doing what's
planned. We can say "it's lifeless and uninhabited" but we really don't know
( and wasn't that said about Australia when discovered ? ), and ironically
it's in the name of looking for the elements which may actually sustain
life. To argue that no harm is being done is like saying Tehran has a free
pass to drop a bomb in the midst of an uninhabited, 'nuclear wasteland' part
of the Nevada desert. Somehow I don't think that would be deemed acceptable.

If uk.current-events.theyarelobbingmoonrocksback does have to get formed, do
you think the audience will split along lines of 'serves us right', and
'they started it', with accusations of 'it's America's fault' prevalent :-)

But what if the Commies get a Moonbase first? The West can't afford a
Moonbase gap!

Besides, the Moon People have been oppressing us for far too long. Have you
considered how many people have fallen victim to lycanthropy? It's
everyone's problem.

So far, $80 million to blow 350 tonnes of moon rock into a six mile high
plume, seems to have been a bit of a damp squib.

Maybe the lack of plume was due to early warning systems and moon-men ( and
moon-women ) rushing out with netting to catch it before it caused any
damage ?

It was like watching Star Trek and trying to work out which star was the
Enterprise! ....I kept wondering if I was looking in the right place!....

Probably some good pictures to come though!

It's surprising that this is the best way to find water... If I ever have
to go into the desert I'll have to remember to take along a few sticks of
dynamite...

No, it's yet more proof that the moon is made of green cheese, so the
probe simply sank into it.

The missile may be slowly working its way through to emerge on the other
side. Will be a 'bit of a bummer' to find it heading straight back towards
us. What with being all cheesey-like.

Wallace and Grommit should enjoy it, though. ;-)
