Pakistani picks up 4 Swedes and 7 Turks
Or should I say, 11 Kurds.
AP:
MULTAN: A Swedish citizen with the same name as another Swede who was
arrested in Pakistan in 2001 and held for two years at the Guantanamo Bay
prison camp, was detained last month on suspicion of links to Al Qaeda,
police said on Friday.
Mehdi Muhammed Ghezali was arrested with three other Swedes and seven Turks
near the country's Tribal Areas, a police officer said on condition of
anonymity. A Pakistani man was also travelling with them, he added.
He did not know about Ghezali's past activities, but confirmed he was
carrying a Swedish passport bearing the name Mehdi Muhammed Ghezali. A
police document obtained by The Associated Press lists the names of the 12
arrested men, including Ghezali and three other Swedish citizens, including
a woman. The document identified the Pakistani man as a member of a
paramilitary force in the northwest.
A Swedish national by the name of Ghezali was held for more than two years
by the US at its prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, after Pakistani authorities
arrested him in 2001.
Ghezali reportedly was part of a group of 156 suspected Al Qaeda fighters
caught while fleeing from Afghanistan's Tora Bora Mountains.
Ghezali denied any links to Al Qaeda and was released by the US in 2004.
A spokeswoman at the Foreign Ministry in Stockholm said it had received no
information on the matter.
The 11 foreigners were arrested on August 28 in Dera Ghazi Khan. Police said
at the time, they had entered the country from Iran and were planning to
travel to the Tribal Areas. One was carrying a laptop computer and $10,000.
It was not clear where they were being held.
At the time of the arrests, police did not say whether there were any
Swedish nationals among the group.

This is a hot one. More later.

Re: Pakistani picks up 4 Swedes and 7 Turks
The Times (Pakistan):
A Swedish national who was imprisoned at the US military base in Guant?namo
Bay for several years has been arrested in Pakistan. Mehdi Ghezali was
arrested last week at a checkpoint in the southern town of Dera Ghazi Khan.
He was travelling with a group of foreigners to the South Waziristan tribal
region, an al-Qaeda stronghold on the border with Afghanistan. Mr Ghezali is
among three Swedes and four Turks who are now being interrogated by
Pakistani Intelligence on suspicion of entering the country illegally and to
see if they have links with militants. A senior Pakistani army officer said
that they had come to Pakistan via Iran. Mr Ghezali was carrying a laptop
and $10,000 (£6,000). A resident of Orebro, in central Sweden, Mr Ghezali,
30, had previously been arrested in December 2001 near the Tora Bora
mountains in eastern Afghanistan and was handed over to the US military. He
spent more than two years at Guant?namo Bay before being released in 2004
without charge.

Maybe the laptop carried the missing 9/11 anniversary video. But that's not
really important. A lot of AQ's propaganda goes through Turkey, definitely.
That applies in particular to the Islamic Jihad Union, which is largely
German ex-Turkish. The Muslims in Sweden are mostly Turks as well. The
Turkish propaganda nexus has agents in a few European countries including
Sweden.
