A bad weekend for the Afghan Taliban
http://www.thenews.com.pk/updates.asp?id=86098

Excerpt:

Late Saturday in eastern Khost province, bodies littered the ground after a
huge joint operation in the Spera district in which paratroopers dropped
into battle from helicopters, police said.

Provincial police chief Abdul Qayoum Bakizoi said one Afghan soldier was
killed in the operation that left 35 Taliban fighters dead.

In neighbouring Paktika province, which also borders Pakistan's tribal
region, Afghan and NATO troops destroyed a bunker complex used by the
Haqqani network to store arms and shelter foreign fighters, officials said
Sunday.

About the Paktika battle:

The Paktika enemy were part of Sirajuddin Haqqani's network. Haqqani himself
was the target of a recent drone strike in Pakistan. I don't know yet if he
is dead.

Re: A bad weekend for the Afghan Taliban
I'm also hearing that in Peshawar (capital of NWFP, and long an important
city to al-Qa'ida) the security people have just rounded up 30 illegal
Afghans and 15 others, along with a large quantity of guns and ammunition,
at a number of different addresses around the city. It looks to me like the
result of an intelligence windfall of some kind.

Reports from around Swat of dead bodies being found, bound and shot. Said to
be civilians who had collaborated with the Taliban during its brief tenure
there. Not a great number, a few dozen at most.

How very dismissive of civilian murder, and impressive spin to downplay
those murders.

Is it something to do with civilians being murdered by those you think are
the Good Guys ? Would, "not a great number, a few dozen at most", murders
done by the Bad Guys have been so casually dismissed and put aside by
yourself ? I don't think so.

So the US is now fighting in Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan.
The US can't win unless Iran joins in and Iran is too smart for that.

If Iran joins in the US can go all out battlefield warfare (the only
warfare it armed forces are suited for) If Iran does no join in it will
be a very long war of irregular warfare and attrition that the US has no
hope of winning.

Even if Iran does come in and the US uses conventional warfare for the
first month it will then be in an even bigger mess. One that will
destroy the US.
