MoD seeks to cut soldiers' payout
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/8171689.stm

The Ministry of Defence will go to the Court of Appeal later to try to
significantly reduce the compensation awarded to two injured soldiers.

One, who was shot in the leg in Iraq, received £46,000, while the other,
injured in training, got £28,750.

Both had their payouts increased due to complications, but the MoD is
arguing that they should only be compensated for their "original injuries".

The stance has attracted criticism amid mounting casualties in Afghanistan.

Aren't these the very same who say we should respect the covenant this
country has with our soldiers ?

I could understand if these were 'ridiculously large' payouts but these are
paltry amounts, just chicken feed compared to what operations in Iraq and
Afghanistan cost, let alone what the MoD drains away. MP's have fiddled far
more than that in expenses ( and just awarded themselves a 'no questioned
asked' doubling of petty cash with receipts or accountability ). They could
take the money out of the budget for the Olymoics 2012; our squaddies are a
far more worthy cause.

What makes it even more disgraceful is that the MoD published their annual
accounts Monday last and they show: <quote> MoD has been forced to write
off hundreds of millions of pounds in losses and "special payments" despite
the fact that the defence budget is already stretched thin. According to
MoD’s annual report and accounts for 2008-09, over £516 million was removed
from its books due to losses, special payments or "advanced notices of
loss". Approximately £203 million was definitely lost last year and a
further £313 million is believed to be lost although MoD is still
investigating, meaning the losses could be more. <end quote>

The behaviour of this government becomes more obscene by the day!
