OT: Holy Hadrons!
The Large Hadron Accelerator is turned on live on BBC Radio 4 at 8:30am
(presumably BST). I wouldn't be surprised if Sky or Fox covered it too,
given the end-of-the-world component to the story.

I'll be watching/listening. If I'm going to evapourate I don't want to go
out with an embarrasing surprised look on my face! :-)

Damn.... I knew I should have gone to see Batman last week....

The main plank of the legal argument that this is safe is completely flawed.
The conditions in this experiment are not the same as for cosmic
ray/particle events which they say have been happening safely and with which
they have been compared in the official risk assessment. For one thing, the
cosmic particles are in free fall under a weak gravitational force and are
effectively not in a force field. The particles in LHC are under a variety
of intense magnetic fields, bombarded by photons of electromagnetic
character absent from similar collisions in space. Secondly the large cosmic
partcle collisions take place in a low density enviroment far away from
other matter, whereas these take place surrounded by metal and within the
earth's crust. Both of these parameters could introduce unknown particles
and forces ( eg 1000% more gloun influnce for example). Thus to say that
this experiment will be safe is completely reckless. The cosmic particle
comparison is disastrously flawed.
How dangerous could this be?
If conditions are similar to a mini big bang but with an unexpected twist,
unexpected events could occur.
Examples:
1) a singularity in space time is formed. Our region of the universe
collapses.
2) time reverses and a big crunch is initiated.
3) a supernova like event is triggered.
4) a local event is triggered such as a meltdown of France/Switzerland/the
Alps
5) An intense electromagnetic catastrophe is triggered leading to an event
similar to a neutron bomb explosion.
6) The production of a new type of radiation could occur, poisoning the
planet and our atmosphere far more than acid rain.
The probability of these events cannot be scientifically predicted. The
naive glee of Physicists with a new toy is being allowed to risk the
destruction of life on this planet.

You should go see it anyway. It's the best one they've done.

Wow, you sound suicidally disappointed! lol.

I was actually referring to the new Batman movie. You should go see it.
It's really good.

Concentrate TWP. They plan to turn it on this morning but with a thing this
complex it doesn't simply have an "on" button. For the next few weeks they
are only planning to practice with introducing one beam into the circuit in
one direction. There will be no smashing them together for ages yet. So you
can relax and wait for the end of the world in about a month and a half.

Incidentally, I read somewhere that when these two tiny puffs of ephemeral
particles do collide with each other, and believe me they are pretty
ephemeral, the forces generated will be roughly equivalent to hurling a
battleship into a mountain. Personally I think they should have stuck with
the battleship, but there you are.

Yes, I heard them say that after they fired the first beam (I had to leave
part-way through seriously against my will). They let everyone get ready
for the end and they knew all along that they weren't going to do any
colliding!

Maybe they've already screwed time up in the future - there are loads of
time-slip stories, and they're not all from the Bermuda Triangle. I bet
they're all the LHC's fault! Let's get the burning torches and pitchforks
and kill them for what they're about to do!

What do we want? A time paradox! When do we want it? Now that's a good
question.....

I do intend on going, but I'd better be quick about it.

Suicidal? No, but if the world is going to come to an end I'd hate to miss
it. I'd especially hate myself if I didn't have the video recorder going so
I could watch it again later....

The radio news just claimed a girl in India has killed herself in fear
of a black hole. We're all going to die, so the answer is to... erm...

Good point! Did you know that it was official orders in the British Navy for

good reason.

Yes.... The tradition probably dates back to the time when people bathed
twice a year when changing from winter clothes to summer ones and v-v

The UK has won most of the wars it has been involved in whilst creating
the largest empire the world has ever seen......

Remind me what has the US military actually won on it's own?

It's not the war of independence as that was, at least, a three way
fight.

Exactly. As the Grey Funnel Line was once all TB and Navy Cake then I
suppose it was the best that they could do...

I know! I was just kidding!
There's not a lot of that empire left though is there.

What has underwear got to do with the US?
The US didn't fight that war alone anyway. The French helped.

No empire at all. However there is a Commonwealth... The Brits are the
only empire that has managed a move like this. All other empires have
usually completely disappeared and the main controlling country had
disappeared too.

Not sure if the Commonwealth was by luck or judgement. Some one
(probably completely unrecognised in history) must have thought up the
idea

Quite... French and the Indians on various sides. When you say the
French "helped" I suppose it depends on your view :-)

Yes, there is an enormous amount left. Nowadays it is called the
Commonwealth.

Sky have a programme which puts Y2K as the greatest 'hoax' ever on the
grounds that the dangers predicted never materialised. Despite the fact that
was because because people spent billions and years ensuring the threat was

there was a competing plan in the 20s for the major Dominions in the
Empire to form a single federal entity.

This is described in "Studies in the Evolution of Dominion Status" by G.
Neuendorf. (Allen & Unwin: London), 1942

It's a greatly depleted empire from what it was, and it keeps trying to get
smaller. I thought Australia would have left ages ago.

There are some 53 countries in it... Pakistan once left but rejoined a few
years later. There are many advantages to being a member. Drinky poos once a
year at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and the occasional dinner with
Brenda. In a fast paced changing world these things are not to be lightly
dismissed.

There are some different concepts here.

There is the Commonwealth, most of the former pink bits except
rebel-controlled North America, Ireland and some sandy places, plus also
Cameroon and Mozambique;

There are the dependencies which still are pink bits: Bermuda,
Falklands, Neverheardofit Island, British Middleofnowhereland, etc;

Then there are the realms: the Commonwealth countries which are
independent of each other, but share a monarch with each other
(Australia, NZ, PNG, Canada, UK, Jamaica, etc etc).

Australia looked at becoming a republic (like, say, India), but not at
leaving the Commonwealth.
