Priest cleared of abusing girl
A Derry priest has had indecent assault charges against him dropped.
Father Patrick Crilly was accused of two offences against a teenage girl dating
back to the 1970s.
On Monday, the Public Prosecution Service told Derry Crown Court they were not
offering any evidence.
The jury was then ordered to find him not guilty by direction. After leaving the
court, Father Crilly said the "awful nightmare" was over.
He said it was one that had lasted two years and involved more than 20 court
appearances.
Fr Crilly paid tribute to the support of other clergy and said it was too early
to talk about his future plans.

Sadly, I feel that there will be readers here who's first reaction will be "he
got away with it"... Rather then "The man was innocent of the charges and
finally can put the dark cloud of suspicion behind him...
I'm in the latter camp..
What say you?

Bishop Seamus Hegarty, will potentially look into the circumstances if
he has not already done so.
Father Patrick Crilly was cleared of criminal charges.
The one-on-one scenario which can be regulated or legislated for re: PE
teachers (for eg) is more difficult re: Priests.

Given Hegarty's track record, I wouldn't hold my breath.

I understand what you are saying. The Northern Bishops are surely a
problem. I think enough said really.
I have recently left two libel related cases (teaching unions) in the
rear-view window. I have to be constantly lucky.
If I miss just one.
That's it.

i went to a catholic grammar school. but fortunately was never an alter
boy.
although no priests from my local parish has ever been accused.
but actually i'm one of those free-thinking atheist types.
and only a totally blind fool ignored the church saex-scandals.
the only difference between boston and everywhere else is we understand
pedophile priests are crminals. the places where there are no problems are
those place where people keep looking away.

pedophile priests are as likely to offend as an other pervert.
but priests is more likely to be a pedophile than the general population.
that's why cardinal law was hustled out of the country because he knew all
about the pervs and covered for them.

There are problems with the Northern Bishops, indeed with the hierarchy
in England & Ireland.
For example, the Catholic Church in England followed through for Ruth
Kelly (Opus Dei) by agreeing to supervise the state school system re:
sexual misconduct.
They volunteered to associate themselves *directly* with more sexual
abuse than their American brethren have been implicated in.
It also puts Opus Dei directly in the frame in the environs of a
monolithic sex scandal. Sex abuse in British schools is at least as
widespread as it is in the USA. That is perhaps a fairly kind comparison.
It is difficult to deliver positive results for the wider Catholic
commonwealth. child protection is not progressing in an understandable
or uniform manner.
>Father Patrick Crilly was cleared of criminal charges.
Being the de jure position re: Father Patrick Crilly.
The one-on-one scenario can be regulated or legislated for re: PE
teachers by simply requiring them not to be/do or risk etc.
Derry is not a good area for us.
