Ukraine Supports Union of Gas-Transporting Countries

Kiev, Dec 7 (Prensa Latina) Ukrainian President Victor Yushchenko
called to create a union of gas-transporting countries, as the domestic
debate on the tariffs to be paid for that fuel heats.

After meeting with his Polish counterpart, Lech Kaczynski, the
Ukrainian head of State said that he would announce the initiative at a
summit of Eastern European countries scheduled for March in his country.

Yushchenko will propose Poland, Slovakia and Hungary to synchronize the
tariffs for transporting gas from Russia to Western Europe, the
Ukrainian newspaper Komersant reported.

During a press conference with Kaczynski, who was on an official visit,
Yushchenko pointed out that the price for gas transportation must be
increased to meet the hike in tariffs set by the Russian monopoly
Gazprom.

In 2008, Ukraine will be paid 1.7 dollars per every 1,000 cubic meters
of gas carried along its 62-mile gas pipe network, but it will have to
pay 179.5 dollars for the same volume of gas starting in January next
year.

Poland charges 2.2 dollars for transportation and Germany charges three
dollars.

However, sources from Gazprom said Kiev's initiative has little future
because any increase in transportation tariffs will have an impact on
the final price that Germany, France, Italy or Great Britain will have
to pay.
