Members of European Parliament Want EU Policy Change towards Cuba

Havana, Sept 19 (acn) Groups of friendship and in solidarity with the 
Cuban people in the European Parliament and from the South Group of 
European NGOs asked the European Union (EU) to correct its policy 
towards Cuba during a press conference held on Tuesday in Brussels, 
Belgium.

According to Granma news daily, participants in the press conference 
spoke of the need for a change in the policy of the European Union 
towards Cuba that allows both sides to develop relations based on 
mutual respect, non interference in domestic affairs and the absence of 
political conditionings.

Miguel Angel Martinez, vice president of the European parliament, and 
Despina Marcou, representing the South Group, stressed the need to 
eliminated the obstacles that currently obstruct a normal relationship 
between Cuba and the EU, in particular the so-called Common Position 
adopted in 1996 at the instance of the government of Jose Maria Aznar 
in Spain and the unilateral and unjust sanctions adopted by the EU in 
2003.

During the press conference, participants also referred to the 
achievement of the millennium goals on the island and its significant 
contribution to the fulfillment of these objectives in developing 
countries.

For his part, Cuban deputy and Havana Historian Eusebio Leal spoke of 
the reality on the island and the need for a change in the EU's policy 
towards Cuba.
