In search of bouncy castles (and other 1980s words)
Greetings.
Here's a challenge for people with clear memories (and ideally,
documentary evidence) of the eighties. The Christmas edition of Radio
Times had an article about recently invented words such as "minger",
"mullet" and "bouncy castle" which the Oxford English Dictionary people
are researching the origins of.
Here's the article:

And a longer list on the accompanying website:

Some of the dates identified are unbelievably late, and will have you
exclaiming "They didn't have bouncy castles before 1986? No way! And
1994 for mullets? Come on!" The question is, can you come up with any
earlier evidence of any of the words? (Be aware that it's not enough to
prove that bouncy castles existed before then - you also have to prove
that they were called bouncy castles at the time.)
I thought I'd made a breakthrough re "Doing a moony", because I
remembered some 1980s toys called Moonies, dolls of fat blokes you put
in the back of your car that would pull their pants down when you pulled
a string. This post was going to be an appeal to Lister to search his
vast library of Argos catalogues for Moonies on sale, but then I took a
closer look at the website and found that the dictionary people had
already discovered them.

Basts.
