youth-hostel

Use of this discussion forum
In my opinion this Newsgroup which is supposed to be about the YHA has
become a waste of time. The most recent postings have had nothing to
do with Youth Hostels in the UK and their use, facilities and
governance and have generally been junk/spam emails.
Is there any point keeping it going?
Is the forum on the YHA's own website any better?
Is there anybody else out there?
Cheers,
Malcolm Dixon (of York and Northern Regional Council)

Usenet seems to be declining slowly and this group has pretty much faded
away to nothing. However the new forum on the YHA site is good and is
well used, I suggest that is now the best place for hostel discussions.

No, it's not "supposed to be about the YHA" though the YHA is on topic.

Whilst it does appear to be currently dead, perhaps a straw poll of
current readers as to whether it is working keeping or subject to an
RFD for removal?

I would vote to keep it. It's included in the list of groups I
automatically download headers for, so I see whenever someone posts
something.

If I had a question or comment about a particular hostel, I would post
it here.

ICBA accessing loads of different web-based forums for all my
interests and hobbies; a good Usenet reader puts everything in one
place for me. I know RSS does the same for webpages, and that's how I
keep track of blogs which interest me, but I like Usenet and having a
half-dead group isn't, IMO, causing anyone any harm.

It's unlikely there'd be any cause for a RFD.
There are heaps of moribund NGs out there.

Ob: camped at Penzance hostel for a week at the end of summer; one lady
and kids had been there all (7 weeks) summer hols! Rather costly, I'd have
thought.

(Stop me if you've heard it before) I'm getting forget... no please don't
RFD , hey that's not my coat!, mine's much newer!)

I was, sort of, flying a kite without making my opinion clear. Although
uk.* (speaking as a reader of unnc) try and remove dead groups, it's
unlikely any group would be RFDed for removal in the face of opposition.
I'd agree, may not be used [much] at the moment but worth keeping and
I'd also oppose an RFD for removal.

[I was a bit miffed that a YHA regional officer implied that it was only
for YHA and it should be shut down as their web forum was better].

I didn't think that was what was implied at all, in fact it was
phrased as a question not a statement.

Reading it, and would post anything of interest, although it's been
a while since I've been in a hostel of interest.
