A test in general knowledge and logistics!
Hello,
I'm interested in renting a narrowboat after the 19th Dec over the
Christmas holidays.
I am traveling from the states on that day and staying in
Grappenhall near Warrington Cheshire with my daughter.. I've booked
and paid for Christmas lunch at a local pub in Grappenhall then
thought it would be nice to arrive by narrowboat.( I always put the
cart before the horse it seems)
I ,my daughter and son in law have had a total of six weeks canal
cruising under our collective belts and would appreciate any help you
can give planning our arrival at Grappenhall on Christmas Eve by
boat. Party of five including two children 5 & 7
The problem to solve is a rental company close enough to meet our
needs of logistics
and with a start day to make it possible renting the boat for say 7
days get it back on time.
Our original plan fell apart because of the rental company switched
boats and did not change their web site information, but to be fair to
them, we have left it a bit late and maybe will have to put it off
till next year unless you can come up with an answer.
The time start now!! He He!

I can't help you, I'm afraid, though you have hit the right group. What a
lovely idea. I do hope it can happen for you and yours.

You could try, in order of increasing distance from Grappenhall:
Claymoore Navigation at Preston Brook (approx 2hrs each way to Grappenhall)
Black Prince at Acton Bridge (4hrs)
Alvechurch Boat Centre at Anderton (5hrs)
Andersen Boats at Middlewich (9hrs)
Middlewich Narrowboats at Middlewich (10hrs)
Empress Holidays at Nantwich (15hrs)
There's only about 7.5 hours of daylight at midwinter in these
latitudes. The only planned stoppage advertised on that route is
Middlewich Big Lock, which is scheduled to reopen on 18th December.

Additionally, there is Chas Hardern and Anglo Welsh a few hours further
out on the Chester canal.
Chas is a small firm and will surely try to meet your needs.
Not checked for stoppages though.

I suggest you copy your query to http://www.canalworld.net/forums/index.php
which is a much more active group than this one.

More active ?
i.e. woffle more perhaps (:-)|(+[=
There are only a finite number of "rental" companies and I think we have
just about covered them all.
The only addition to my first answer would be the he consider a post
Christmas trip down to Chester and return.
They could take in some heritage and retail therapy, at the same time as
blowing away any Christmas excesses.
If not possible by boat then there is the excellent Barbridge - Chester bus
service.

I appreciate all of your respective inputs. As it has been stated, my
choices are limited, but I think you have given me enough to make a
good old British try, don't you know! Thank you and Merry Christmas to
you all.

Since I got married, it seems to get earlier. SWMBO counts the pay days
to Christmas and only yesterday reminded me that there are just 2 pay
days to Christmas.
Before I married, I was unfortunate if I remembered Christmas before the
20th, when I would remember that I needed to buy cards. I have a
picture somewhere of a work colleague writing his Christmas cards at
work, on the 24th, after drinks and before going home.
I noticed today that WH Smug are selling Advent Calendars already. It
used to be Halloween, then Fireworks and then Advent calendars.
Ah, those were the days (see my signature block).

Hi
When I owned a hobby shop many years ago, Christmas trade fairs tended
to be held in July.
