File formats
I have recently transfered some video tapes to dvd, I now have *.vob
files. Can anybody recommend a suitable program foe editing these
files or converting them to a suitable format that a pc could use?

Hi Francis,

If you have software that can edit MPEG2, then copy the VOBs to
HD and rename to .mpg, as suggested.
However, you'll probably find you aren't happy with the result,
unless you are doing cut-only editing, due to the lossy MPEG2
format.
There are ways around this by using software frame-servers
(eg "Avisynth") which read each MPEG2 frame from the DVD
/.VOB and convert it on-the-fly to create a 'fake' .AVI file,
which you simultaneously have open in almost any video editor.
Have a look at the Tools section here:
http://www.videohelp.com
There are some excellent guides there, too.
It can be quite tricky to set up, so hopefully you'll only be
doing cut-only editing and won't need this extra layer of
complication!

You can edit in Womble http://www.womble.com/ and export your results in
MPEG2, MPEG1 or AVI format or author a DVD etc. Womble has a good range of
effects built in like wipes and fades if you need them.

Another good payware (50US) mpeg2 editor is VideoReDo:
http://www.videoredo.com/
They also have a trial version, so you can test on your own footage.

Another good payware (50US) mpeg2 editor is VideoReDo:

They also have a trial version, so you can test on your own footage.
